IELTS Sample Essay Why does a family “breakdown” and what are some possible solutions? Nowadays, due to financial challenges and other obligations, family members simply have less time to spend together. Hence, divorce is becoming quite common in this day and age. First of all, there are many reasons why a family structure “breaks down”. In order to afford increasing living costs, both parents find it necessary to work. Therefore, both parents will have less time to spend with their children. This inevitably has negative effects on both the children and on the family in general. Peer pressure, excessive television and internet addiction become the main influence on children's behavior. Parents are simply too busy working they may not even notice there is a problem until it is too late. Second of all, parents may be too tired to practice effective communication with their children and each other, even when they are not working. Increasing tension in the family will then build up over time; hence, divorce soon follows. Nevertheless, the problem is by no means insurmountable. In order to prevent such problems such as potential juvenile delinquency and “broken homes”, time management becomes necessary. For example, families should allocate even an hour everyday to be together and reconnect. In addition, any time off should be devoted to communication and family activities, particularly on weekends. In conclusion, responsible planning and time management are the keys to a successful modern family. By practicing effective communication and daily get-togethers, especially at the dinner-table, both parents and children will be able to avoid future problems and succeed as a family.

Some people think that parents should teach children how to be good members of society . Others however, believe that schools are the place to learn this. Discuss both views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Preparing children as good members of society is very important to productive societies. Some people contend this responsibility falls mainly on parents, while others argue educational institutions primarily have this duty. In my point of view, even though both parents and institutions should work hand in hand in order to prepare young people to become responsible members of society, “parental” duties belong exclusively to parents. On the one hand, statistics show that children behave the way their parents behave. For example, a child learns respect for others if he or she is treated respectfully by parents. Hence, the concept of respect begins at home. If children are raised in a respectful environment, and witness all family members treating each other respectfully, they will become respectable adults and behave this way in public as well. On the other hand, some people believe schools are the right institutions where children may receive proper guidance to become sensible members of society. They argue that students spend at least 8 hours a day at school and claim teachers are responsible to teach polite social behavior. For example, if there is a dispute between students, some people claim it is the teachers responsibility to teach their students how to act properly in such a situation. Personally, I feel is an unrealistic request. A teacher's job is to teach, not to act as parent in a classroom. In conclusion, both of these arguments have merits, and both schools and families should work together to make students productive members of society. Overall however, I believe the stronger claim is to have “parental” responsibilities fall primarily upon the parents.

In today's world, many young people dream of becoming entrepreneurs
In today's world, many young people dream of becoming entrepreneurs. Self employment is an interesting and challenging lifestyle. A lot of people want to help make the world a better place, through volunteer work, service trips, or working with a non-profit organization. As a result, more and more successful entrepreneurs are looking for ways to combine “doing good” with profit. First of all, self employment offers many benefits. The main advantage is that one can choose the type of work according to their interests. A self employed person can manage his working hours on his own and can work at his own pace. This not only allows independence, but encourages business owners to complete every task carefully and with 100% effort. Second of all, successful entrepreneurs earn huge salaries while affecting a major portion of the population. Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook is a primary example. But being a successful entrepreneur is not only limited to creating “social networking” websites. Some entrepreneurs have even managed to combine a successful business with the idea of “giving back to the community.” Many successful entrepreneurs volunteered or performed community service first, and used these ideas to help humanity. For example, Heather Hasson of “FIGS USA”, a clothing company, volunteered in Africa and met children who were unable to attend school because they lacked a school uniform. Heather decided to start her own clothing company “FIGS”. For every classy necktie FIGS sells, a child in Tanzania or Kenya gets a free school uniform. The key point here is that volunteering gave her the business idea. If she did not volunteer, she would never have thought of the idea in the first place. Furthermore, CEO Laila Sedky of “Nola Cupcakes” in Egypt also uses her business to help others. Laila Sedky was a volunteer herself before starting Nola. Now as CEO, Nola supports the Ahl Masr Foundation and many other healthcare organizations in Egypt. Her company helps spread awareness about these organizations by recruiting volunteers both in Egypt and internationally. This is another amazing example of “giving back to the community”, while operating a successful business. Hence, these are very impressive and well-rounded individuals. Thus to conclude, I believe that the entrepreneurial track can definitely change lives. International volunteering and community service are never a waste of time. As we have seen, by reading, researching, attending workshops, conferences and spending your time with motivated and interesting people, these are the keys which help make someone a successful leader, and hence, a successful entrepreneur.

IELTS Writing Task 2: You should spend about 40 minutes on this task
IELTS Writing Task 2: You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. You should write at least 250 words. Present a written argument or case to an educated reader with no specialist knowledge of the following topic: The idea of having only one career is becoming old fashioned. Nowadays with entrepreneurship, globalization and the internet, the new trend is to combine entrepreneurship with your current job and eventually turn it into a career. Use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and with relevant evidence. It is believed that focusing on a single career is out of date these days. The new trend is that people are becoming more and more interested in entrepreneurship, and are trying to turn it into a full-time career. I completely agree with this point of view. First of all, it is a fact that most people in the past were loyal to their company, focused on one career and remained there until retirement. However, now with globalization and modern technology, most people have turned modern day challenges into profitable opportunities. For example, the founders of uber.com used a simple problem to create a brilliant opportunity. On a snowy Paris evening in 2008, the founders of the company had trouble hailing a cab. So they came up with a simple idea-- tap a button on a cell phone, get a ride. Today uber.com is an international company worth over 17 billion USD. This is an excellent example of how normal people can turn everyday challenges into successful business opportunities. Second of all, many successful entrepreneurs also discover how to solve problems by volunteering or performing community service, and then use these ideas to help humanity. For example, while a business student at Massachusetts University, Heather Hasson volunteered in Africa and met children who were unable to attend school because they lacked a school uniform. After graduation, Heather decided to start her own clothing company “FIGS USA”. For every necktie FIGS sells, a child in Tanzania or Kenya gets a free school uniform. The key point here is that volunteering gave her the business idea. If she did not volunteer, she would never have thought of the idea in the first place. In conclusion, I personally believe that most people these days are not interested in doing the same job for the rest of their life. Technology and globalization have given us opportunities our ancestors never had. By doing internships, attending business conferences, volunteering etc., people are exposed to problems and can then discover possible solutions. Hence, this is how entrepreneurship begins for most people, and eventually becomes a very successful lifelong career.
