MEASUREMENTS!! Day 1
3
Agenda Today we will go over 4 basic types of measurements… Length
Volume Mass Temperature
4
Background: Metric vs. English
Most of the world uses the METRIC System, USA and England use the English system Metric System Based on a system of 10’s Ex. Length: 1 meter = 10 decimeters = 100 centimeters = 1000 millimeters Mass: 1 kilogram = 10 hectograms = 100 dekagrams = 1000 grams Why is it called a decimal?
5
Length Tells us how much SPACE something takes up in 2D
How long something is Base Unit: Meter (m) Tool: Ruler, Yardstick, Meter Stick, Measuring Tape, … Ex. METRIC Meters (m) Centimeters (cm) Height, Width, Length Ex. ENGLISH Yards (yd) Inches (in)
6
Using a Ruler
7
Volume Tells us how much SPACE something takes up in 3D
Base Unit: Liter Tool: Graduated Cylinder, Beaker, Ruler, … Ex. METRIC Liters (L) Milliliters (mL) REMEMBER: READ THE MENISCUS when measuring volume in a graduated cylinder Ex. ENGLISH Gallons (gal) Quarts (qt)
8
Using a Graduated Cylinder
9
Mass Tells us how much matter an object contains
Base Unit: kilogram (kg) Tool: Scale, Balance, … Ex. METRIC Kilograms (kg) Grams (g) Ex. ENGLISH Pounds (lb) Ounces (oz)
10
Temperature Ex. METRIC Ex. ENGLISH
Tells us how much KINETIC ENERGY an object’s particles have How hot or cold an object is Base Unit: Kelvin or Celsius Tool: Thermometer, … Ex. METRIC Degrees Celsius (°C) Kelvin (K) Ex. ENGLISH Degrees Fahrenheit (°F)
11
Tie it Back Together (TBT)
1.) If you were measuring volume, which is a correct unit? a.) K b.) L c.) g d.) kg 2.) What measuring tool would you use if you wanted to know how much heat energy something had? What about how heavy it was? 3.) How would you calculate the volume of a full tank of water if you only had a ruler?
