3 NGC 6872: A Stretched Spiral Galaxy Explanation:
Measuring over 700,000 light years across from top to bottom, NGC 6872, also known as the Condor galaxy, is one of the most elongated barred spiral galaxies known. The galaxy's protracted shape likely results from its continuing collision with the smaller galaxy IC 4970, visible just above center. Of particular interest is NGC 6872's spiral arm on the upper left,, which exhibits an unusually high amount of blue star forming regions. The light we see today left these colliding giants before the days of the dinosaurs, about 300 million years ago.  NGC 6872 is visible with a small telescope toward the constellation of the Peacock

*work on casting shadows/moon talk worksheet when done! “Where no man has gone before!”

5 First body paragraph – Evidence:
Introduction - Goal: My project goal was __________________________. My first product was ______________. To make this product I ______________________. This product helped me to meet by goal by __________________. My second product was ______________. To make this product I ______________________. This product helped me to meet my goal by ___________________________. (add product 3 &4 if you had a partner!) First body paragraph – Evidence: Next, I was successful in meeting my goal because __________________. For example, (put in piece of evidence here)___________. Another example that proved I was successful was, ___________________. Ultimately, I know I was successful in meeting my goal because ________________. Second body paragraph – STEM: Finally, The science I learned by doing this project was ________________. For example ___________. The technology I learned by doing this project was ________________. For example ___________. The engineering I learned by doing this project was ________________. For example ___________. The math I learned by doing this project was ________________. For example ___________. Conclusion- Lesson: Overall, I think _______ went well on this project and if I could re-do the project I would improve on ______________. In addition, I learned ____________________ from doing this project. (if you had a partner, add what they learned)

6 Science Fair IMPORTANT DUE DATES
3/17 – Student will have decided on their topic and partner (if any) 3/24 – Product #1 – Rough Draft DUE – Including Purpose through procedure on the written report. 3/31 – Product #1 – FINAL DRAFT DUE! 4/7 – Product #2 – Rough Draft DUE! 4/13 – Product #2- FINAL DRAFT DUE! 4/21 – Formal Conclusion/Reflection DUE! – buy & bring poster board by this date!) 4/28 – Science Fair Poster DUE! (EVERYTHING SHOULD BE DONE BY THIS DATE!) 5/1-5/2 – In class Science Fair Presentations 5/3 – SCIENCE FAIR!

7 Computer Model Simulations:
Eclipse Simulation: Fill out the worksheet for lunar & solar Eclipses 2. Complete the casting shadows T/F worksheet Moon Phase Simulation: 3. Fill out the moon phase calendar

8 Eclipse: An event which one object in space casts a shadow on another object.
Eclipses are named for what is being blocked from view. Lunar Eclipse: Earth comes directly between the Sun and a Full Moon. Resulting in the moon being darkened by the Earth’s shadow. Solar Eclipse: When the New Moon comes directly between the Sun and the Earth. Part or all of the Sun is blocked from view by the Moon. Umbra: Smaller, inner shadow – area of total eclipse Penumbra: Larger, outer shadow – area of partial eclipse Waxing = light on right (growing) Waning = light on left (shrinking) Crescent = less than half Gibbous = more than half

9 Lunar Eclipse Solar Eclipse

10 New Moon Not visible Beginning of cycle Phase one
Sun is behind the Moon

11 Waxing Crescent Waxing means “growing” Waxes during 1st half of cycle
Phase 2 Small Sliver on right visible

12 First Quarter Entire Right Side visible 1/4 of the cycle is complete
Phase 3

13 Waxing Gibbous More than ½ but less than all is visible Still Waxing
Phase 4

14 Full Moon ENTIRE near side visible ½ way through the cycle Phase 5

15 Waning Gibbous Waning means “Shrinking”
Less and less of the nearside is visible Small sliver on right missing Phase 6

16 Last Quarter Entire left side of moon visible Completed ¾ of the cycle
Phase 7

17 Waning Crescent Less than ½ is still visible Still Waning
Last phase before returning to New Moon. Cycle will repeat
