Your union is one of many supported by the American Federation of Labor and Committee for Industrial Organization, know as the AFL-CIO.
Unions enable workers to negotiate for higher wages and improve conditions in the workplace; And in 1986 the AFL-CIO established Union Plus as an additional benefit to union membership.
Through competitive cost-saving discounts we have a 30 year history of serving labor members.
Our mission then and now is simple — to improve the quality of life for working families through our unique products and services.
I want to dispel a few myths. Many members think they have to “join” Union Plus or pay a fee to belong.
But Union Plus means just that: those extras that come with being a union member. There is no cost to use these benefits – and no need to sign up for them.
If you’re a dues-paying member of a union like AFSA you’re already eligible.
We don't manage or use any union membership dues to finance our budget or benefits. Period.
We also don't manage any union pension funds or health care funds.  Typically your union handles those benefits directly.
Transition: Our job is to negotiate with nation-wide companies to find the best deals for union members.

AT&T is the nation’s only unionized wireless carrier so in support of CWA workers Union Plus offers discounted wireless service.
We offer a 15% discount on your monthly cell phone bill, which helps members save over $100 a year.
Our AT&T discount is one of the easiest to use – simply pick up a coupon from your local -- or print one at UnionPlus.org/ATT -- and take it into any AT&T corporate store along with either your union card or a paystub showing union dues being deducted and a store employee can apply the discount to your bill.
For union leaders – who work directly for the local – and have their cell phone bill paid for by the union -- you can save 18% on your bill every month.
Bring the same items I mentioned plus a business card that identifies your position with the local.
And for locals looking to “shop union” AT&T reps in your area will be working with Union Plus to reach out to you about saving 22% on your locals’ landlines.

6. Only 2% of AFSA members with AT&T take advantage of the 15% discount
We surveyed AFSA members to find out their wireless carrier.
As you can see, the majority of your members use Verizon Wireless, an ANTI-UNION carrier.
Only 27.3% use AT&T.
And, most importantly, only 2% of all AFSA members who have AT&T service are currently participating in the 15% AT&T discount program
– that means that of the almost 30% of AFSA members that do have AT&T service nearly all of them are paying 15% too much for their wireless service because they do not know that their union offers them a discount.
That’s a huge growth opportunity for the AT&T discount program among AFSA members.
We would love to work with your locals to figure out how we could educate more members about the AT&T discount and encourage them to participate.

Through our partnership with Wells Fargo we have helped countless union members purchase homes and stay in them.
Locals may be aware of our current Mortgage program because one of the steps involves a form the local signs off on, verifying that the member is in good standing with the local.
In addition to the successful mortgage partnership we’ve had with Wells Fargo for several years we are now happy to assist the AFL-CIO as they create their own mortgage brokerage.
The benefits will be largely the same, however there will be multiple options for mortgage lenders besides Wells Fargo and the loan process will be done entirely online.
Transition: Our mortgage benefit has one of the highest member values and supports workers in times of hardship through mortgage assistance programs including paying the mortgage -- for up to 6 months -- for members on strike or laid off from work.

Union Members are eligible for these benefits one year after they close on their mortgage.
[DIASTER RELIEF] We began our Mortgage Assistance program in response to Hurricane Katrina and since then we’ve been offering $500 checks to Union Plus Mortgage holders affected by FEMA declared disasters; like Hurricane Sandy. These grants cover hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and wildfires.
[HOSPITAL GRANT] $1,000 in aid is also available to mortgage holders with large, unreimbursed hospital expenses.
All of our programs are designed to help working families -- and a few of our programs are open to family members of union members to apply for. The union mortgage program is open to children and parents of union members.

9. The first program the AFL-CIO created for union members was the union credit card.
There are many options for credit cards in the market but the AFSA credit card through Union Plus is the only one with hardship help whether members are facing job loss – disability – high hospital bills or a strike.
We are still offer union credit cards and have recently introduced the new Primary Access card to help members build credit. 
Research among union members found that the most important feature members request is no annual fee, so non of our card options have an annual fee. 
Transition : There are (3) AFSA card options in total and they differ depending on how you plan to spend your money. One popular option allows members to earn 1.5% cash back everytime they swipe their card.

Hardship grants from Union Plus are financial assistance, which does not need to be paid back and helps members during some of their toughest times.
We’ve given out $8.5 million in assistance to members who needed it most.

Every year we do a competitive review of our programs and discounts and where we are not the best value we renegotiate or add a unique union feature.
It is our goal to make sure we provide a value that is better than what members can get through other channels, like through the employer, or as a non-member.

For Car Rentals we offer a 25% discount at Avis, Budget, Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty and Payless.
We looked into which car rental companies were most used across the board by union members and offered the best value and kept those, removing the companies that were used the least or charged the highest rates.
For Pet Insurance we relaunched the program through “Pet’s Best” who had high customer satisfaction scores and a claims process that takes just 5 days so members are reimbursed quicker. Union Plus offer up to a 10% discount and covers accidental illnesses, emergency care, hereditary conditions, prescription medications and much more.
For entertainment discount we have changed providers who now offer local deals and a mobile app.
