Infrastructure Virtualisatie

Virtualisatie SAN Storage Pool Infrastructure Centraal beheer
4/15/2018 Virtualisatie Infrastructure One of the core capabilities of Storwize, is its data virtualization. This is a core capability inherited from the first SAN Volume Controller, delivered in the market over a decade ago. However, just because we have had this capability for a long time, does not mean we should forget to explain its value. Many of of our competitors are still trying to match this level of data virtualization, that extends beyond internal storage and to a very widely supported set of external storage devices from IBM and other manufactures. 1st, this data virtualisation capability, enables combining the capacity of multiple disk storage controllers into a single storage resource. All to often, in customers with a heterogeneous environment, storage arrays tend to be server aligned. This is because different vendors solutions use different drivers to connect, and the server will only support one driver at a time. So if a server is connected to an EMC system, it can’t also be connected to an IBM system at the same time. This means, if its own storage resource gets consumed, even if there is spare capacity on the IBM array, it can’t take advantage of it. So now there is a need to purchase more storage, even what there is other storage under utilized. This is where data virtualization comes in. With the virtualization layer, the physical barriers are removed. To the point where the server no longer knows where the data physically resides. By being able to put the resources from multiple systems into a single pool, utilization levels can be dramatically improved. 2nd This single resource can now be managed from a single, central point. 3rd Once you have this single resource, you can apply copy services across all the disk controllers in this resource. You can perform point-in-time copies, aka FlashCopy, or replicate data using metro mirror or global mirror. Again, in a heterogeneous environment, having different copy services from different vendors make data consistency a significant challenge. Different replication methods from different vendors, means data can be in a different consistency state at the point of a disaster, or connectivity break. Through Data virtualization, applying a single replication methodology, ensures all data will be in the same consistency state, even if its been stored on different arrays. It also opens up the possibility to replicate from one vendors array, to another. So it could a mix of EMC, HDS and IBM on the production site, all replicating to HP disk on the remote site. 4th, The key to all this is the ability to perform many tasks with your storage infrastructure without disrupting the applications using the data stored on the disk controllers. So, for example. With a traditional system, moving data that belongs to an application, requires an outage or disruption in service. Traditionally there is a static connection between the host system and the physical disk. So in order to move the data involves; Stop the application Move the data Reestablish a new set of static connections between the host and the new disk system And restart the application. This is why traditionally, infrastructure changes required a planned outage, at a weekend, involving lots of overtime. Trying to pick a time when the impact of the outage is minimized. However, why have an outage at all. Why take the risk of losing business during the outage. Why take the cost of having to invoke DR to keep systems active. You want to keep DR for just that, real disasters, not normal operations. With IBM Storwize Data Virtualization, things are very different. The host system is dealing with a virtual disk, not a physical one. That inflexible relationship fixed. So, all the administrator has to do is to tell repoint the application, via the Storwize system, to another physical disk,. The host system and the business application running on it, doesn’t have any idea the change has been made. No adapting no outages Infrastructure changes can be made during business hours. <click> One particular customer calculated that they now save £1 million per year in overtime savings alone. Thanks to the ability to move data, and make infrastructure changes, without having to plan an outage, without having to pay overtime to staff to come in an non-business hours. That’s a real, tangible cost saving for the data equation. Reduce cost, without reducing value. Indeed, this is reducing cost, with increased value, as the environment gained a new level of flexibility, able to adapt 24x7, not waiting for the next scheduled maintenance window. Automated tiering is the next Strategy and Best Practice. And Moving data to the right place is an important Best Practice. Easy Tier automatically moves data to the right tier, keeping costs under control, while delivering the right performance levels for active data. quickly adjusting service levels to meet business requirements. Activating it really is simplicity itself. Efficiency without complexity. Easy Tier does this by leveraging the value of Flash storage, with minimal investment. In fact delivering, Up to 3x performance, with as little as 5% of the storage being Flash based. And its all automatic. The customer does not need to perform studies, track trends, look at historical performance statistics. Easy Tier uses embedded analytics, so you can set it and forget it. Inactive data is held in a lower tier, and consistent monitoring and analytics, ensure data is always in the right place. Easy Tier significantly improves the performance of new and existing applications, while lowering the cost per I/O And with this latest enhancement, now supports automated data movement between up to three tiers of storage, so can leverage the performance of Flash drives, the price/performance of SAS drives and lower cost per GB of NL SAS drives. Competitors either haven’t delivered this type of technology, or have chosen not to disclose their price/performance numbers. IBM, on the other hand, publishes benchmarks, including this audited, Storage Performance Council benchmark, to help clients understand the reality behind the marketing. HDD Arrays
