1 Perspectives on Implementing ESM
Workshop on E-waste Recycling and Refurbishing: Environmentally Sound Management Practices Getting down to business: The Benefits of ESM Perspectives on Implementing ESM Jeff More eCycle Solutions Guadalajara, Mexico February 15–16

2 Objectives of the presentation
Introduce eCycle solutions Review why ESM has increased in importance in Canada Suggest why ESM needs to be part of any company’s business model Share some ideas on how to begin Offer two invitations

3 eCycle Solutions Privately held electronics waste recycler
Electronics recycling – from asset management to “urban mining” - is our only business Coast to coast services with facilities in five provinces Primary recycler with 3 de-manufacturing phases: Material sorting and manual disassembly Mechanized shredded and separation State of the art commodity “upgrading” process technology Fully certified “downstream” partners Tracked & audited down to elemental material recycle Customers include: Industry managed provincial stewardship collectives OEMs Business and institutional users

4 eCycle Locations

5 Disassembly Monitors and TV’s are manually disassembled to liberate:
Intact Cathode Ray Tubes, which are shipped downstream for glass-to-glass recycling. Plastics, which are baled and shipped to a downstream processor Electronics, which are processed in our mechanized shredding system

6 Mechanized Shredding / Separation
Basic concept is to liberate the electronics constituent materials (i.e. the plastic, wire, steel) adequately to allow for proper separation Achieved in a “Chain Shredder” All computers, printers and peripherals are suitable for shredding

7 Commodity Upgrading Liberated and size reduced materials processed through specifically designed separation machinery to produce required commodities

8 ESM Environment in Canada
ESM has become the cornerstone of the electronics waste management business: No more piles of waste material outdoors No broken down equipment No environmental hazards being ignored No unacceptable labour practices No polluting of the environment No land filling of unwanted material

9 The key “macro” drivers ….
Both corporate customers and provincial stewardship programs demand a high environmental standard The public wants waste management to be done responsibly and not by land filling The public wants Canada to solve its own waste management issues — no export of environment issues to other countries And they are prepared to pay for it through environmental management fees on new purchases Employees want to work for environmentally responsible businesses

10 A critical enabler..... Creation of a Recycler Vendor Qualification Program (RVQP) Established in 2006 Defines the requirements to be a qualified electronics waste recycler Developed by a consortium of manufacturers Adopted by all provincial stewardship programs Adopted by all “qualified” electronics recyclers in Canada

11 RVQP: Areas covered under the standard
Insurance Management control systems Health and safety Material disposition and downstream tracking Material processing

12 The biggest impacts of the RVQP?
Downstream tracking through to the point of reuse of material controls the exporting of waste RFP’s are largely based on the highest possible recycling rate thereby weeding out subcontractors that are land filling High standards for training and health/safety eliminates operations with low EMS standards Clearly defines what companies wishing to implement ESM should expect from their providers Sets an “even playing field” for companies that provide ESM

13 Why implement ESM? Factors for company’s of any size and industry include: Your customers – and their customers – demands for ESM will continue to grow: Both a formal and an informal element used in the selection process Multi national corporations are now defining EMS requirements for subcontractors even more rigid than the RVQP. Often a required certification for dealing with government or your customers that sell to government Will be a reason to lose business or a competitive advantage to win business

14 Why implement ESM? Factors for company’s of any size and industry include: Synergy with other quality and control systems: ESM standards such as ISO & R2 complement and support standards such as ISO 9001 Developed disciplines in developing an EMS programme will carry over into other initiatives in the company An important element in promoting overall good business management practices

15 Why implement ESM? Factors for company’s of any size and industry include: Your employees and external stakeholders will put increasing importance on ESM: Increasingly import for attracting the most talented employees A key perception element in maintaining positive relations within the community in which you operate, including meeting public demands that electronics waste be properly managed An important indicator of your company’s overall stance on being environmentally A critical part of the an enterprise’s focus on “doing the right thing”

16 The eCycle Solutions approach
We believe companies looking to establish an ESM programme for eWaste should look for a partner that can deliver: Full and robust Vendor Qualification Standards across their entire business and their “downstream” partners A well established and fully certified “chain of processing ” from receipt of electronic product through to final form of each commodity family A very flexible approach to working with customers to deliver to their individual needs – NOT a “one size fits all” A “turn-key” approach that can provide all the elements the customer requires from one “expert” partner

17 Two invitations We believe that developing a growing eWaste ESM market is both good business and the right thing to do We look forward to open discussions with either: Companies in any industry looking to establish an internal eWaste ESM programme Companies just starting or looking to become eWaste processors

18 Muchas Gracias Merci Bien Thank You
