We have educators coming together from across CA, Welcome to the Creativity at the Core summer institute sponsored by CCSESA, in partnership with the Santa Clara COE, CREATE CA, and the California Dept. of Education How many elementary teachers? Deepen knowledge of the California State Visual and Performing Arts Standards: artistic perception, creative expression, cultural and historical context, aesthetic valuing, and connections, applications, and relationships.

Many of the presentations are based on the Creativity at the Core created by Regional Arts Leads from across the state in partnership with their arts organization partners. We encourage to take a look at the web site www. Creativity at the Core, to see all the useful resources that are available to you. I would like to refer to the list of partners on page of your program. ‘ Your wheels give you a sense of the modules, and we have more in the works. I have such respect for these professionals and the body of work represented here and I know that you will too as you will have an opportunity to experience these firsthand.

Two Strands of Learning ADMINISTRATIVE/LEADERSHIP STRAND TEACHER STRAND *Participants are free to choose the strand that they believe would benefit them most* This strand is designed for administrators and leaders who would like to plan and implement professional learning opportunities focused on arts and Common Core State Standards. This interactive strand will allow you to discuss professional learning opportunities and how this might work with your staff and/or others that you serve. TEACHER STRAND This strand is designed for educators who would like to gather new approaches and strategies for their students. This strand will offer many hands-on approaches that will allow participants to experience content so that you will be able to translate it into your specific learning environment.

14 Innovative Leadership
Innovation leadership involves different leadership styles and organizations to influence the greater community in order to produce creative ideas, actions, and solutions. Innovation leadership involves different leadership styles and organizations to influence the greater community in order to produce creative ideas, actions, and solutions. I am going to turn the mic over to our partner and host, Jeannine Flores, who has been instrumental in helping to plan and coordinate this event. Jeannine Flores is the Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator and a member of the STEAM Team at the Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE).  Ms. Jeannine Flores has been in education for twenty years.  Her work at SCCOE involves offering Professional Development, advocating the Arts for all students, integrating Arts with the STEAM Team and showcasing the talents of the county.   She is an alum of California State University, Long Beach and Concordia University, Irvine.  Her background is instrumental music and has outstanding experience at both the elementary and secondary levels. Jeannine was named teacher of the year in 2005 and has received grants from Disney and Mr. Holland’s Opus.

Dr. Milton Chen is senior fellow and executive director, emeritus at The George Lucas Educational Foundation (GLEF) What About the Common Core of the Child? Milton Chen, Ph.D. Dr. Milton Chen is senior fellow and executive director, emeritus at The George Lucas Educational Foundation (GLEF), a non-profit operating foundation in the San Francisco Bay Area producing the award-winning Edutopia.org website on innovative K-12 learning. He served as executive director of GLEF from 1998 to Dr. Chen has been the founding director of the KQED Center for Education (PBS) in San Francisco; director of research at Sesame Workshop in New York, helping develop Sesame Street, The Electric Company, and Contact; and an assistant professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. During , he was one of 35 Fulbright New Century Scholars. Dr. Chen serves as chairman of the Panasonic Foundation in New Jersey, which supports superintendent leadership and district improvement, and is a member of the board of directors for Sesame Workshop and the California Emerging Technology Fund. He chairs the education committee for the National Park System Advisory Board, advancing the agency’s work in STEM and humanities education. Dr. Chen’s career has been honored by the Fred Rogers Award from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the Congressional Black Caucus. He recently received the NHK-Japan President’s Award for contributions to educational media and was named an Honorary National Park Ranger by the National Park Service. His 2010 book, Education Nation: Six Leading Edges of Innovation in our Schools, was named as one of the year’s best education books by the American School Board Journal. Perhaps most importantly, on his 50th birthday, Dr. Chen was named a Jedi Master by George Lucas!

Guest Speaker Updates from the California Department of Education Dr. Tom Adams, Deputy Superintendent - Instruction and Learning Support Branch | California Department of Education Thomas “Tom” Adams is the Deputy Superintendent of the Instruction and Learning Support Branch. This branch includes programs on early education, K-12 curriculum guidance, instructional materials, professional learning, career and college readiness, and English learner support. Prior to his appointment as Deputy Superintendent, Tom worked in the Curriculum Frameworks, and Instructional Resources Division (CFIRD) for 18 years and 12 of those as the as the Executive Director of the Instructional Quality Commission (formerly known as Curriculum Development and Supplemental Materials Commission). CFIR plays a key role in the implementation of state-adopted standards through the development of curriculum frameworks and the adoption of K-8 instructional resources. His received his doctorate in modern European history from the University of California, Davis, and earned his undergraduate degree in history from California State University, Chico.  In addition to his duties at CDE, Tom is also a member of the Board of Education for the Davis Joint Unified School District. 32 Patty Taylor, Artist and Senior Consultant | CCSESA Arts Initiative
Guest Artist Collaborative Art Making Experience: Creating Together: One to Many - Sight and Sound Patty Taylor, Artist and Senior Consultant | CCSESA Arts Initiative Patty Taylor is the Senior Consultant for CCSESA Arts Initiative and serves on the Creativity at the Core Leadership Advisory. She served as the Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator for the California Department of Education for 13 years. She is a writer, facilitator, workshop presenter, and teacher in arts education with extensive experience in collaborative committee work and planning. She was the writer for the current Visual and Performing Arts Framework for California Public Schools (2004), and coordinated the development of the Content Standards for the Visual and Performing Arts and the writing and publishing of the Arts Education Program Toolkit: a Visual and Performing Arts Program Assessment Process. Patty was the staff person to the 1997 visual and performing arts task force and produced the report titled ARTS WORK: a Call for Arts Education for All California Students. She developed and coordinated various statewide arts education projects, initiatives, and committees including the Arts Work Grant Program, the Model Arts Program Network, and the California Arts Assessment Network. She served as a liaison to the arts education field both statewide and nationally. Patty now serves as the Senior Consultant to the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association Arts Initiative ( This initiative was launched in 2006 to advocate for and strengthen arts education in California public schools through a statewide network. Beginning her career as a middle school art teacher and artist, she continues her art making practice as Taylor Gutermute.
