2 What is an Undergraduate Nurse Employee (UNE)?
An “Undergraduate Nurse Employee” is a student enrolled in an approved School of Nursing, and who is employed by the Employer to provide nursing care but is not a: Certified Graduate Nurse, Graduate Nurse - Temporary Permit Holder, Graduate Psychiatric Nurse, Registered Nurse, or Registered Psychiatric Nurse.

3 What are the qualifications to be a UNE?
1) Current enrolment in an accredited nursing program. 2) Completion of a minimum of 450 clinical hours of practice. *Note: Documentation of current and on- going enrollment and number of clinical hours completed will be required from the Faculty of Nursing. 3) Completion of a BLS-HCP program with current certification.

4 Important to Remember A UNE is an unregulated employee working on an inter-professional health care team, who helps to provide patient-centered care while under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse. UNEs are responsible for requesting consultation or guidance from the regulated member when assistance is needed.

5 UNE Skills Competency The UNE must have had appropriate theory and practice in their nursing education program and be competent in any restricted activity prior to performing the skill in the course of caring for a patient/client/resident. UNEs are accountable for the activities or tasks assigned to them, and for providing care within the boundaries of their knowledge and competency. UNEs are responsible for appropriately reporting signs, symptoms, and changes to the supervising regulated health professional, and for requesting consultation and guidance from the regulated health professional when they identify a need for assistance.

6 Rate of Pay As per the United Nurses of Alberta (UNA) Collective Agreement: The current UNE wage is $27.68 per hour.
