Changes of State California Science Standard 8.3.D.E 8.5.D.
Purpose: Introduce changes in the state of matter.
2
Change in State A change in state is the conversion of a substance from one state to another. Example: ice water vapor melting vaporization ice water vapor freezing condensation
4
Melting: Solids to Liquids
Melting is the change in state from solid to liquid It is a characteristic property of a substance Example: water melts/freezes at 0 C Melting is an endothermic change, heat is taken in, absorbed to cause it
5
Freezing: Liquids to Solids
Freezing is the change of state from liquid to solid This is an exothermic change because energy is being removed from the liquid
6
Vaporization: Liquid to Gas
Vaporization is the change in state from liquid to gas This occurs at the boiling point for that substance This is also a characteristic property of a substance, just like the freezing point
7
Condensation: Vapor to Liquid
Condensation is the change in state from vapor to liquid
8
Sublimation: Solids to Gas
Sublimation is the change in state from solid directly to gas Example: dry ice
9
Endothermic vs. Exothermic
Example: ice water vapor melting vaporization endothermic ice water vapor freezing condensation exothermic
