CAM 101 Welcome to CAM 101 ! In this introductory class, we are going to look at the expanding field of CAM(complementary and alternative medicine), and the role of CAM in todays’ modern society. CAM has been around since time began. In ancient Egypt for example, Disease was a pretty normal part of everyday life. Many skin conditions(i.e. parasites, appeared because contact was made with the waters of the Nile River). Worms, and even tuberculosis were frequently seen, and treated, these conditions were passed from the cattle to the human population. Pneumonia was an everyday issue, because sand was constantly being breathed into the lungs. The Egyptians didn’t have modern day medicine as we know it, to treat these conditions, so they did the best they could, with what they had. Although many maladies would have been challenging at best, and some may have seemed impossible, the Ancient Egyptians were able to use the knowledge they did have, to perform even the most basic of surgeries,(they were well-known for their rituals and prayers for healing as well). The ancient Egyptians had the ability to deal with typical everyday I ssues, simply by using natural remedies. These “natural remedies” are considered homeopathic remedies by todays’ standards. Just a few of these remedies include, but are not limited to: While many ailments would have been difficult or impossible to treat (though they would have used what knowledge they did have to conduct rudimentary surgeries as well as carry out rituals and prayers for healing), the Egyptians were able to treat many less serious conditions through the use of natural remedies. Many of the remedies are familiar, as they are used today as homeopathic remedies. They included: Pain relief – thyme and laxatives – Dill, balsam apple, onions, parsley Asthma – sesame, honey and milk, frankincense Digestive aids – garlic, sandalwood, juniper, mint Breathe freshener – mint, caraway Chest pains – juniper, mustard seeds, aloe Headaches – aloe, poppy seeds Wound dressing – honey, a natural antibiotic Anesthetic – poppy seeds (also used for insomnia) Burns and skin diseases – aloe Epilepsy – camphor Vomiting – mustard seeds to induce it, mint to stop it Along with their strong faith in their gods, the Ancient Egyptians used their knowledge of the human anatomy and the natural world around them to treat a number of ailments and disorders effectively. Their knowledge and research is impressive still today, and their work paved the way for the study of modern medicine.

CAM 101 Another component in the study of CAM is the element of nutrition. Proper nutrition is a crucial component in overall health and is most beneficial to the human body as well. There are no limits to the amazing health benefits that a wholesome, nutritious diet provides. These health benefits not only keep the body in good physical shape, but also benefit overall mental well-being. The term “proper nutrition” isn’t referring to starving or going without food, it simply means that a diet which is balanced, and consists of lean proteins, as well as carbohydrates and fats, provides many health benefits, as well as making the likelihood of obesity and type 2 diabetes almost non-existent. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to have a healthy diet. There are so many ‘healthy diet’ guidelines everywhere, so the key is to make sure that you include a variety of foods, from the major food groups: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, lean proteins, (don’t forget to include beans, and other legumes), as well as nuts, seeds, and berries. Healthy fats(avocado, coconut oil, olive oil). Proper diet guidelines will provide valuable information about how much food to choose from each food group. Be sure to be budget-conscious, and include foods that can be found at a local grocery, rather than a gourmet or specialty store. Also make sure the diet you choose will suit your tastes as well as your lifestyle. Also be sure to take into consideration any health risks that may influence your diet.

CAM 101 – ESSENTIAL OILS Essential oils are being hailed as one of today’s most popular “all-natural” miracle remedies…..however, using essential oils for health and wellness, is a practice that dates back thousands of years. Some of the earliest known uses of essential oils date back to the ancient Egyptians. There are many ancient texts which refer to the oils as the “nectar of the Gods.” It is estimated that there are at least 500 references to essential oils in the Bible, so it is very likely that these ‘miracles’ of Mother Nature were most likely highly revered by Ancient Man. Essential oils can be considered as the“life blood” of a plant. These oils travel throughout the circulatory system of the plant tissue, providing much-needed nutrition to the cells, while helping to flush the waste products out. This is where the“essential” part comes from, for without these oils, the plant would surely wither up and die.The Human body can be thought of as a plant, as the human body needs proper nutrition in order to thrive, as well as being able to flush out waste products. Essential oils are just as beneficial to the human body as they are to the plants from which they come.
