2. What is Digital Literacy? for parents and students
Digital literacy is the use of digital skills to locate, evaluate, and create information.
Digital literacy is the ability to use and understand different sources and formats from a variety of computer sources.
Digital literacy is the ability to read and gather information from a variety of resources for the purpose of completing a task.

3. Why is Digital Literacy Important to students?
Students need to move beyond a simple answer to understanding a concept or an idea. (Bloom’s taxonomy; from “Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Analyzing, Evaluating, to Creating.)
Learning to become a good “Digital Citizen”. Understanding and applying responsible techniques in the use of technology and avoid bullying and plagiarism.
Expand conceptions of the digital world. –Expand current knowledge of technology from fun and entertaining activities and apply to classroom and real world projects.
Enabling Differentiation- Students can use digital technology to help meet their diverse needs and learning styles.
Making thoughtful technology choices- students can make choices about technology to incorporate their cultural differences with teacher support.
Improving Technology-Students can use technology in the classroom to make learning more meaningful and relevant.

4. What you need to know before you begin…
What type of site is it? What is their motive? E.g. to sell products, to inform …
.edu usually means school, colleges, universities
.gov usually means state for federal government publications
.com can mean commercial, news, or businesses
.org usually means an organization’s research studies
2. Who is the author and are they credible? Google them. What make them an authority?
3. How current is the information? Don’t not use information older that 5 years with consulting me first.
4. Is the information supported by others? Do other materials contradict or say something else?
5. How can you use this information? Does it relate to your work? Is it relevant?

5. How to Stay Safe Online?
Do NOT give out person information such as name, phone number, address or without parent’s permission.
If something feels weird or “not right”, tell a parent IMMEDIATELY.
NEVER agree to meet someone that you met online.
Ask a parent BEFORE you post a picture online.
NEVER respond to a mean message without first discussing it with a parent.
Discuss rules and expectations of usage with your parents before you get online.
ONLY share passwords with parents.
ALWAYS check with a parent before downloading or making purchases.
BE a good citizen and DO NOT post or say anything hurtful to or about anyone.
I will teach my parents and siblings new constructive ways to learn about and utilize technology for the good.
