Classifiying Matter
2
Types of Matter Notes Sort
Using prior knowledge, sort the slips to match up with the correct category. When finished, brainstorm three examples of each.
3
TYPES OF MATTER physically separable chemically separable
4
PROPERTIES OF MATTER What is matter?
What is mass? Anything that has mass and takes up space The amount of matter an object contains
5
SUBSTANCES A substance is matter that has a definite and uniform composition Substances have identical intensive properties. One type of “stuff”
6
More than one type of “stuff” together
MIXTURES A mixture is a physical blend of two or more substances. They can be physically separated. How can you separate a mixture? More than one type of “stuff” together One type of “stuff”
7
HETEROGENEOUS vs. HOMOGENEOUS
There are two different types of mixtures. A heterogeneous mixture is one that has more than one phase (part of uniform composition) A homogeneous mixture has only one phase.
8
MIXTURES physically separable Not uniform Uniform throughout
9
HETEROGENEOUS OR HOMOGENEOUS?
Saltwater Spaghetti sauce Muddy water Cough syrup Salad Brass
10
TYPES OF SUBSTANCES ELEMENTS COMPOUNDS AND
There are two different types of substances: ELEMENTS AND COMPOUNDS
11
Substances Unlike mixtures, substances are made of exactly one type of matter throughout. How can you tell it isn’t a homogeneous mixture (with one phase?) They cannot have a variable composition.
12
ELEMENTS An element is the simplest forms of matter.
Each element is represented by a chemical symbol.
13
COMPOUNDS A compound is a substance that can be separated into simpler substances only by chemical means
14
Quick Lab Activity With your lab parter, go to each of the 15 stations. For each station, observe the materials put out and determine if it is a substance or a mixture. If a substance, determine if it is an element or a compound. If a mixture, determine if it is heterogeneous or homogeneous.
15
Substances By Station Oil and water Copper wire
Calcium carbonate (chalk) DI Water Kool-aid Rocks and sand Aluminum foil Balloon full of air Brass Zinc metal Saltwater 100% ethanol Helium (tube) Block of wood Graphite

Post Activity Questions
Which was the easiest category to identify? Why? What would you have to do to decide whether a substance was an element or compound? How could you tell the difference between homogeneous mixtures and a substance?
