1 Early Childhood Education
Kelsey Fields Senior Project May 20th 2016

2 Background on My Project
Early childhood education because I love working with kids and helping them. Mentor was Anna Wolfe, New Haven Elementary School. Total hours spent on my “project product”- (24:55)

3 The Importance of Early Education
It is important to start education early on for a multitude of reasons… 1) A child's brain is more alert, and its capability to take in information and remember it is high at their age. For instance, if they were in sixth grade, it would be harder for them to perfect these skills. 2) Children learn how to do certain skills in kindergarten that they will need to take with them when they go to first grade. 3) Children get to work with other kids in kindergarten, and working with others is a very important skill to have.

4 There Are Four Development Skills That Children Gain From The Ages of Three to Five
Intellectual Development- children begin to name colors and understand numbers. Physical Development- they start to draw people with body parts at the age of five, and they start to use things like scissors, as well as hopping, climbing, and swinging. Social Development- they start to interact more with other children as well as starting to deal with conflicts and solve problems. Emotional Development- children have a wide strand of emotions at the ages of three to five years, and this is the time when they can move easily from fantasy and reality causing them to become confused on how to act during certain situations.

5 Teachers!!! Teaching is a very important and sometimes a very difficult job to do; if you think about it -without teachers, there would be no other professions out there. Kindergarten teachers are shaping the minds of little kids, so that is why it is important when you are a teacher to be the best that you can be because at that time, they are looking up to you and learning from you. Kindergarten teachers get paid roughly $54,814 dollars a year as of March 24, 2015.

6 My Amazing Opportunity
Mrs. Wolfe's Class 11/20/16 1st day at New Haven!

7 Some Legal Paper Work I had to do Before I Could Take Pictures
Before I could take pictures of the activities that I did with the kids, I had to type a permission slip to send home with the kids for their parent/ guardian to sign. (permission slip copy is in my portfolio)

12 RAK After our Thanksgiving activity, I thought about what is one activity I could do that would make a difference, and I threw ideas around in my head trying to figure something out. After having a conversation with Mrs. Hussell, I figured out what to do. Random Act of Kindness

13 Children's Hospital When I went to Mrs. Wolfe’s class for my last time on March 30th, the class that day was different than any other day after I explained to them what they were going to do and what it was for. What I had the kids do was make pictures and letters for the kids that are in the hospital, and I explained to them that some of the kids that are in the hospital are not able to go to school with friends and learn like they can.

16 Children's Hospital When I went to the children's hospital, I got the opportunity to talk to their Child life specialist, Christi Bissett, about how the kids cope and about their schooling. Depending on how long the children are in there determines the the path of schooling they do. If they are in there for a short amount of time, their mom or dad picks up their school work from their school and will hold it until the child is ready to do it because at times, they are to tired to do anything which is understandable. If the child is in for a long time, they have a teacher come in that is specialized in helping those kids and work with them to keep them caught up. It just depends on the situation and time period.

17 The “PLAY ROOM/ SAFE ROOM”

18 What Is The Safe Room? The safe room is a place that is for the kids to feel safe as it basically says where there are no doctors or hospital beds. Anything in the safe room they can take back to their room if they do not feel like staying in there and playing. They have items like movies to toys and more.

19 The Cool Things That the Hospital Does to Bring Awareness.
April was child abuse awareness month, and coming from my background, this meant something to me.

20 Children’s Garden

21 Final My adventure through doing a senior project has been quiet amazing and memorable. Some difficulties through my project was finding time and getting a hold of my mentor and the hospital before I went. Other than that, it all worked out, and I could not have done it without my mentor and the help of Mrs. Hussell. I have decided to change my career path now and go into flight attendant schooling once I graduate because that is where my heart is set.
