Learning Outcomes Identify different layers of the Rainforest
By the end of the lesson I will be able to... Identify different layers of the Rainforest Describe characteristics of each layer of the Rainforest Evaluate how the layers of the rainforest depend on each other for survival Evaluate how well my team worked together The Big Picture: We are learning this because we need to appreciate how fragile the Rainforest Ecosystem is and why it is important to protect it in order to maintain the Earths biodiversity.
3
MAIN TASKS: Group Display Work– 15mins
WORK AS A TEAM! Choose a team leader who is in charge of the laminated diagram. The others in your team then number yourselves 1 to 4. 1=Forest Floor. 2=Understorey Layer. 3=Canopy. 4= Emergents. Then...Follow the instructions from your group leader to individually create your layer of the structure of the Rainforest. Add clear labels of height of layer, name of layer, and how much sunlight it gets. Then...Draw on at least 2 different species of plant or animal to your layer of the forest using your species sheet. Then...Add the arrows and labels as a group to complete the Nutrient Cycle onto your display. *Your leader will sellotape the groups work together when you’ve finished so make sure your layer matches up accurately with the other layers in your groups! You may be asked at random to present your groups work when finished!
4
Analysis from my tree house!
“My description of the Rainforest’s structure” Starting at the top of the Rainforest... “My evaluation of the layers of the Rainforest” Each layer depends on another layer to survive, starting at the top here’s how... *Extension* If a layer were removed, then this is what would happen ( inc examples of species affected and how)
5
The Tree House Peer Assessment!
Swap your work with a partner. Read carefully their descriptions and evaluations then use this criteria to give them a KS3 Level. L7 = Descriptions with more than 3 species mentioned at each layer. Evaluation discusses in detail how every layer depends on each other to survive. L6 = Descriptions with 2 or 3 species mentioned at each layer. Evaluation comments on how 2 or 3 layers depend on each other to survive. L5 = Descriptions with 1 or 2 species mentioned at each layer. Evaluation states how 2 layers depend on each other to survive. L4 = Description gives an example species for 3 to 4 layers . Evaluation states the importance one 1 forest layer.
