Through THE Recreation and Community Programming division, JaxParks offers a variety of structured recreational opportunities. I’ll run through the list first, then we can talk about each in more details.

25 facilities are staffed by the City, who currently handles operations and programming
7 more are managed by partnership agencies, including PAL, the Tony Boselli Foundation and Heart for Children.
10 sites are not staffed full time, but are available for weekend rentals and community meetings.
Two centers are available for community meetings only, these are located in Oceanway and Mayport
And, right now, we have three facilities not available for use. These are Russell Bill Cook off of Jones St. NW Jacksonville, Forest Park on Forest St. and Scott Park on Hamilton Circle. We currently have an RFP out for a partnership manager for Russell Bill Cook.

Summer camp – activities ranging from traditional day camp activities like outdoor games and crafts to more specialized programs like environmental education and the arts.

This past year we served more than 14-hundred children, mostly ages 6-12, at 23 different camp locations. Camp fees are $50 per two week session; we offer three two-week sessions, and we do work with the Jacksonville Children’s Commission to provide scholarship assistance.
This past summer it cost us $389,910 to run our summer camp programs…
And we brought in $212,375… it’s important to note here that the 200+ thousand is not a profit… in fact, we spent $177,535 more than we brought in.

After School – called Club Rec. Ages 6 – 12, with three locations now open for teens 13 – 17. All programs are free. The focus is on recreational activities with additional homework assistance and social skills

The program if free to participants… the cost to JaxParks this past year was $390,601.
Note that $80K of that 390-thousand-plus is attributed to our program at Mary Lena Gibbs Community Center in West Jacksonville. That program serves approximately 120 children and is funded through a JCC grant.

Fitness classes – range from full service fitness centers to walking programs, aerobics, yoga and more.
The photo you see here is of an aerobics class at our Forestview Fitness center. Forestview is a fitness center only. We also have the Cecil Gymnasium, that is a full-service fitness center with a weight room, cardio equipment, training, racquetball courts and a basketball gymnasium.

This past year we served approximately 942 people – primarily adults – in our fitness programs…
At 15 locations, including our two fitness centers.
It cost JaxParks $277,922 to run those programs… $206,000 of that is the cost to run the Cecil Gymnasium.

JaxParks provides arts and crafts activities in all of its youth programs, but aside from that, it offers special art classes like ceramics, drawing and painting and pottery.

One of those locations is JaxParks only full-time art studio… Murray Hill Art Center in the west Riverside area.
JaxParks spent more than $15-thousand to run those programs last year.

In addition to art and fitness classes, JaxParks also offers a number of other specialty programs.. This photo is of one of our martial arts classes. We also have various dance classes, seniors classes, computer classes… and, of course, we’re looking for more opportunities.

Under Recreation and Community Services, we also have the division of Waterfront Management and Programming, which houses our parks naturalists… but they partner very closely with programming and provide a lot of opportunities for environmental education

This past year, more than 1,000 folks of all ages participated in environmental workshops… these include trail walks and talks, children’s hands-on nature activities, and programs that encourage appreciation for critters like spiders and snakes, and also our area’s natural habitats.
Programs were offered at 19 of our community centers, in addition to a number of our preservation parks.
It cost us, last year, approx. $1,500 to offer these activities – free to the public.

Two years ago, JaxParks began looking for opportunities to bring small-scale entertainment events into the local areas… and so far we’ve been quite successful.
We try to host at least two events a month, a lot of these are offered at facilities in the two seeds of change neighborhoods. This picture if of folks gathering to watch one of our Movies in the Park… we also have events called Flick and Floats that include a movie and pool games, we have dances… and just recently we offered a video challenge, which was quite popular with the teens and tweens.

With summer coming up, you’ll all be hearing more about these programs… our aquatics activities.

JaxParks operates 34 outdoor swimming pools that are open during the summer months…
And one indoor aquatics facility at our Cecil Recreation Complex that includes an Olympic-sized pool and a smaller fitness pool. The picture you see here is of a group of kids at the Cecil pool.
JaxParks’ learn-to-swim programs have always had a good reputation… in addition to teaching people the proper swimming techniques, they also place a huge emphasis on knowing how to be safe in and around water… the classes are for all ages… starting at 5 months.
At our Cecil Aquatic Center, we also offer aquatics fitness classes… they have aqua aerobics and aqua pilates… which is starting to be very popular.
A very popular program is also our JaxParks Swim League… and

Swim lessons, by the way, are $40 for two weeks, and we offer three two-week sessions.
We also hosted more than 1,000 swim team participants through JaxParks swim teams. We also host participants from Bolles and other groups… and this year we will host our first Jacksonville Swim Classic, bringing in swimmers from all over the country
And 76 children in our Jr. Lifeguard Camp… this is a really neat program that teaches youngsters lifesaving and rescue techniques, and prepares them to be future lifeguards.

JaxParks understands that we can always improve our processes and we do a lot of surveys to help us find out what our uses like and want.
