3. Workplace & Continuing Education Desired Skills / Requisites
The BOE, in collaboration with stakeholders representing K-12 education, institutions of higher education, business and industry, policymakers and community leaders should develop a Profile of a Virginia Graduate. In the development of such a Profile, the BOE should consider the “5 Cs” – critical thinking, creative thinking, collaboration, communication, and citizenship – needed for success in the Virginia economy.

In addition to this work, a high school council has been created to begin the process of developing a vision for a new student experience in our schools. The committee consists of teacher and administrators from each high school, central administrative staff, lead instructional coaches and a middle school administrator. The goal of this group is to develop a draft program guide and sample student pathways that will be delivered to the board in February for your feedback.

The council is beginning to develop suggested way in which we could help our students meet the goals of the profile. A suggestion that has emerged from our work is to develop a thematic focus for each year of high school beginning with self-exploration and foundations in the ninth grade, collaboration and discovery in the 10th, community and connections in grade 11 and culminating with passion and transition in a students final year. We envision these themes being delivered through a dedicated advisory period and also interwoven into their coursework.

The council also began thinking about what changes we may need to make so that student choices are driven by personal passions and interests instead of by competition for college admission. Ideas that we may bring forward to the board include:

The HS2022 team has used our work to date to develop this Day in the Life video of how a student’s experience might look different in the coming years. We’ll debut that for you tonight.
