Welcome to Room 23! October 7, 2016 Important Dates Reminders
Language Arts This week we learned a new comprehension strategy, creating images. Students listened to a story about wind while closing their eyes, practicing how to create mental images in their heads. We also created “Autumn is..” poems by using the five sense to describe Autumn. Some examples of what students wrote are: “I hear leaves crunching when I walk on them.” “I taste pumpkin pie.” “I feel the wind blowing my hair.” Word Study We continued practicing the short /o/ vowel this week. We practiced adding and taking away letters to form new words with the short /o/ sound. We learned two new word families, -op and –ot, and practiced making these words with fun phonics games. We added new words to our word wall, please practice these at home. They are: got, not, what Science Our Solar System unit came to an end this week. We ended with a review on all of the planets that we learned about and created our own planets that we believe should be in the solar system. Ask your child to explain their ideal planet to you! Alternates for the week:
Donations! If you have any games at home that you would like to get rid of or happen to be throwing out, feel free to donate them to our classroom! These are games that can be played during indoor recess and will especially be helpful as it starts to get colder. If it’s an educational game, even better! Weekly Reports Weekly reports and OPTIONAL homework packets started this week. If you would like your child to do the homework, they can bring it back to school if they’d like, Oct. 31, but do not have to. Don’t forget to ask your child about his/her weekly report. We went over these together today. Please sign and return this to school on Monday. Mystery Reader: We had our first mystery reader this week and the students LOVED it! Everyone was so surprised, including the student who belonged to the mom that came in! If you are scheduled to be a mystery reader, please don’t tell your child! It’s meant to be a surprise and it’s a lot of fun for the kids to guess who’s coming in based on the clues you provide me! Math This week we started Chapter 2: Making Number Bonds. In this chapter, students are learning how to use number bonds to show the parts and whole for a given number. We have been using a math balance to find number bonds for numbers to 10. The students have been playing fun addition games, such as “Roll, Add, Color,” and “Pumpkin Patch Bump.” You probably have noticed the fall themed number bond worksheets that they brought home and can continue coloring at home! Next week, we will continue with chapter 2.
