2
Sustainable development
Introduction The project aims to develop a replicable, systemic and integrated strategy to facilitate the development of smart cities, through near zero energy renovations of existing residential districts. Objectives Holistic approach Increase the quality of life Work towards a more sustainable and energy efficient cities: smart cities Environmental objectives Social objectives Sustainable development SMART CITY Economic objectives Use of Renewable Energy Sources ↓ GHG emissions Energy demand ↑ + =
3
Background in city renovation
EU approach in energy efficiency renovations Lacks: definition of “smart city”, integrated global approach, etc. Global vision required to cover the complex character of urban areas It is needed a systemic methodology for large areas renovation, aligned with sustainable planning principles. EPB Directive 2010/31/EU > Building scale New buildings Renovations > > District scale Renovations City scale Renovations smart city approach EE Directive 2012/27/EU Principles of Sustainable Strategic Urban Planning Global context Reliability Social consensus Environmental accountability Social accountability Evaluation and control
4
The CITyFiED project methodology
The CITyFiED methodology is focused on a replicable strategy for city renovation at district level, with the energy efficiency as main pillar. The CITyFiED methodology main pillar Energy efficiency Local authorities Stakeholders Public participation External Consultancy Group Architects Engineers Urban planners Constructors Financiers Energy co. Etc. Buildings application areas Mobility and Transport Energy generation and distribution needed features Global and integrated approach Stakeholders allocation Procedures, tools and guidelines Decision making process Etc. Indicators sustainable perspective Environmental aspects Social aspects Economical aspects

The CITyFiED project methodology
CITyFiED methodology PHASES I. Understanding the city II. Diagnosis of the city at district level III. Analysis of the initiatives and scenarios IV. Prioritization and selection of the intervention scenario V. Strategies for Sustainable Urban Renovation VI. Execution and commissioning VII. Monitoring and impact assessment evaluation
6
The CITyFiED project methodology
Application of the CITyFiED methodology: > The city renovation is promoted by the local authorities. > The objectives and needs of the city/district are established by local authorities, the consultancy group and public participation: Detected lacks and opportunities + Desirable sustainable future of the city > The consultancy group proposes initiatives focused on: Reducing GHG emissions and energy demand + Increasing the use of RES > Selected ones are considered in scenarios for retrofitting. Their sustainable performance and impact at city level is analysed.
7
The CITyFiED project methodology
> The scenarios are presented sorted by prioritization criteria, to ease the decision making process. > The discussion to select the scenario is an open dialogue between the consultancy and the committees from the municipality. > The initiatives from the selected scenario is further developed at city scale: Strategies for Sustainable Urban Renovation > The strategies are implemented, considering other aspects as business models, social acceptance, quality control, etc. > The intervention is monitored. The results are evaluated with regard to the initial objectives and correction actions are proposed.

The CITyFiED project methodology
Validation and replicability of the methodology The methodology will be validated and refined as case study in the demo-sites of the CITyFiED project Lund (Sweden) / Soma (Turkey) / Laguna de Duero (Spain) though the CITyFiED City Cluster that enrols 11 European cities This feature facilitates the replicability of the methodology and city renovations actions
9
Conclusions The CITyFiED methodology….
…includes the value of innovation: application of a new procedure. …consists of a holistic approach that includes sustainable perspective considering environmental, social and economical aspects. …considers needed features identified for the smart cities’ development: stakeholders identification, indicators, tools, guidelines, etc. …facilitates the decision making process with regard to the selection of sustainable strategies to be implemented. …is a validated and replicable methodology to work towards the transformation of existing cities into smart cities. Validated! Replicable! Innovative! Holistic!
