1
Doppler Effect and Redshift
2
Parts of a Wave
3
Wave Properties Wavelength
Wavelength, l, is the distance between two consecutive peaks.
4
Wave Properties Amplitude
Amplitude is the height of the wave above or below the equilibrium point. How loud or strong a wave is.
5
Wave Properties Frequency - the number of waves passing a particular point in one second.
Frequency, f, is Also known as pitch. Longer wavelength = Lower frequency = red shift Shorter wavelength = Higher frequency = blue shift
6
DOPPLER EFFECT Refers to the change in frequency when there is relative motion between an observer of waves and the source of the waves Doppler with Sound
7
The Doppler Effect Change in frequency due to relative motion of the source. Greater the speed of the source, greater the effect. Stationary bug Bug swimming
8
Hubble’s Discovery Hubble observed that the wavelength of light coming from distant galaxies was experiencing redshift . This means the light source is moving away from the observer and increasing in wavelength (doppler effect). The longer the light travels, the more it gets redshifted.
