2 Warm Up: 2/1/2017 Instructions: Turn in your Cornel notes on Mutation Types and Causes to the turn it in box on my desk & start working on answering the questions below: What is a mutation? What are the 3 main causes of a mutation?

3 Agenda 1. Genetic Disorders Project

4 Learning Objectives 1. You will design a model about a genetic disorders to explain mutation types and causes.

5 Agenda 1. Genetic Disorders Design Project: Parts 1-3c

6 Learning Objectives Be able to explain that mutations are the result of errors in Meiosis, DNA replication and environmental factors. Design a model about a genetic disorder to defend a claim about genetic variation arising from specific mutations.

7 Your Task In groups of 3 or 4 create a model about how to treat a genetic disease of interest. Your model must be creative and will be used by your team to justify why your method will work at treating a genetic disorder of your choosing.

8 Part 1 Exchange contact information with your partner. Create a shared Google Doc to organize the tasks at hand. Create a table detailing your role and your partners’ roles in the design and research. Break up the tasks so your partner and you can complete an equal amount of work!

9 Part 2 Detailed answers to the following prompts on your shared Google Doc: a) Initial Research: Pick a genetic disorder to research. What are the symptoms? What are the long-term outcomes for the affected patient? Will further assistance be required as the patient ages? What population is affected? Can anyone be a candidate for the disorder? Could the disorder have been prevented? Are there any treatments or cures? What is the current status of research on this disorder? Is there a cure coming soon? b) Causes: Are there prenatal tests for this disorder? How is it inherited? (Is it sex-linked, recessive, or dominant?) What gene or chromosome is affected by this disorder? (X,Y, # 21) c) On a separate plain white paper (you will be turning this in separate from the Shared Google Doc): Create your own pedigree. You may have to research how to draw pedigrees for your chosen genetic disorder.

10 Part 3 Poster and redesign of your proposed model.
Your poster should include: a) A labeled sketch of your model b) Answers to the following prompts: How will your solution correct the mutated gene or chromosome? If applicable, describe why your solution is better than what has currently been proposed? c) Gallery walk of Feedback to gain possible insight about how to refine your model.

11 Closure: 2/1/2017 “Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease.” -Proverb Write and cite evidence from our discussions about why you agree or disagree with the above proverb.

12 Homework: 2/1/2017 Bring Supplies for Your Project

13 Warm Up 1. What else do you need to do to complete your project?

14 Part 4 Build a prototype of your model using the supplies you brought from home. Add labels to your model. You will use your model to pitch your idea on how to treat the disease.

15 Part 5 Gallery Walk You will be evaluating your prototype by presenting your project to a panel of experts. The goal is to prove why your solution should receive funding, therefore you must: Justify how your model will treat the genetic disorder based on your knowledge of the patterns of inheritance associated with the disease.

16 Part 6: Reflection 1. Reflect on your design learning project experience in 1-2 short paragraphs: Discuss your role in the creation process of your design. How does your design target the specific mutation or cause of the disease? How would you change your design? And what would you keep the same?
