History The mosque of Ibn Tulun was built during AD by the Egyptian ruler of the Tulunid Dynasty Ahmad Ibn Tulun in Cairo, Egypt. Later in 905 AD, Cairo was attacked but the holy mosque was saved. Soon after, the mosque was forgotten. The mosque was later used for many purposes including the use of shelter for pilgrims in the later centuries. Above is a picture of the mosque of Ibn Tulun and surrounding buildings.

Restoring the Mosque In 1296, Ibn Tulun was first restored by Mamluk Sultan Laijn, an assassin conspirator who hid in the mosque. Laijn promised that he would restore the mosque if he lived. Other remodels have been done including work in 1999 on the famous fountain and flooring as shown below.

Islamic Architecture Islamic Architecture is mainly based and built for religious purposes. When you visit a mosque, it shows your dedication and respect towards God. This minaret has a very unique staircase and is used to call followers to worship.

Fun Facts The mosque of Ibn Tulun is the third largest in the world!!! It is approximately 26,318 sq miles. It is also the oldest mosque in Egypt. Ibn Tulun is known for its unique designs and stucco covering the mosque.
