1 Internet of Things (IoT) for Automation and Electrical Engineering
ELEC-L8403 Internet of Things (IoT) for Automation and Electrical Engineering Seppo Ovaska Spring semester, 2017

2 Outline Arrangements Motivation Internet of things (IoT)
Cyber security Discussion This lecture forms a motivation for the seminar sessions

3 Arrangements For both doctoral and advanced master’s students
Doctoral dissertations on IoT technologies Security Fault tolerance Sensors Applications Seminar format designed for 5–10 participants Two 45-minute seminar presentations by each student Weekly homework assignments Critical evaluation report or “statement” Final discussion

4 Arrangements cont’d Grading No final exam
Seminar presentations 60% Homework assignments 30% Seminar interaction 10% No final exam Compulsory 80% attendance Tentatively five doctoral dissertations Monographs from American universities Completed in 2015 or 2016 Different viewpoints Varying quality Three levels of interaction

5 Popular Internet of Things Forecast of 50B Devices by 2020 Is Outdated
Current estimates are around 30B

6 Motivation Internet of things belongs to every R&D engineer
Agriculture Building Energy Healthcare Material handling Smart grid Traffic, ... And if not yet today, certainly during your career! IoT opens opportunities to develop novel applications

7 A sample of startups

8 Internet of things (IoT)
Various devices and machines connect to the Internet and communicate with one another And they do stay connected constantly This allows for tons of gathered data Such data, once interpreted and analyzed, becomes the focal point of the purpose of IoT Real-time interpretation and application of live data is what makes the IoT useful Cloud-based applications interpret and transmit the data coming from multiple sensors

9 Hackers Remotely Kill a Jeep on the Highway
“I was driving 70 mph on the edge of downtown St. Louis when the exploit began to take hold. Though I hadn’t touched the dashboard, the vents in the Jeep Cherokee started blasting cold air at the maximum setting, chilling the sweat on my back through the in-seat climate control system. Next the radio switched to the local hip hop station and began blaring Skee-lo at full volume. I spun the control knob left and hit the power button, to no avail. Then the windshield wipers turned on, and wiper fluid blurred the glass. As I tried to cope with all this, a picture of the two hackers performing these stunts appeared on the car’s digital display: Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek, wearing their trademark track suits. A nice touch, I thought. The Jeep’s strange behavior wasn’t entirely unexpected. I’d come to St. Louis to be Miller’s and Valasek’s digital crash-test dummy, a willing subject on whom they could test the car-hacking research they’d been doing over the past year.”

10 Cyber security Cyber security is a major issue with IoT
It does not belong just to the “network people” Would you jump from the top of a high-rise building to the ground if some authority asked? Of course not! You first check the feasibility of commands and requests to protect yourself Also IoT devices and machines need application-level self-protection And this is a responsibility of engineers who develop automobiles, cranes, smart grids, etc.

11 Discussion From the brief discussion on volume, multi-disciplinarity and security, it is obvious to conclude that We all need to prepare ourselves for the IoT era This course could be a starting point for a career-long journey The amazing speed of change and development is new to the engineering community Compared, for instance, to the penetration of electricity and telephony And, by the way, we started to build embedded systems already 40 years ago
