1 Year 1 Autumn 1 Curriculum Newsletter
Welcome to Year 1, we hope you have had a good summer holiday! The children are settling in really well. Could you please leave your child at the gate in the morning as this will continue to encourage their independence. A member of the Year 1 staff will be available at the door in the mornings and at either class doors at the end of the day. Please feel free to come and ask any questions or pass on relevant information to do with your child. English The focus for this half term will be stories by Allan and Janet Ahlberg, including the story of “Funnybones”. The children will be learning how to write simple sentences, thinking carefully about spelling. They will be looking at basic punctuation, including full stops, capital letters and finger spaces. They will also be learning how to write a non-fiction sentence about Harvest. Children will also be taught phonics daily to help them improve their reading and spelling. Topic “Funnybones” and “Super Sandwich” This term we will cover two topics. In our ‘Funnybones’ topic, the children will be looking at their bodies, how we grow and change. During this topic we will be visited by a real life scientist. In ‘Super Sandwich’ we will be looking at Harvest and how food grows. Science: Our Bodies Art: Painting PSHCE: Getting to know you RE: Harvest and thankfulness Computing: Starting up/ shutting down a computer and Coding. Maths In Maths we will be learning to: Order numbers Add and subtract Count forwards and backwards in 1s Investigate the length and height of objects Recognise coins Add small amounts of money

2 Learning together at home
English Speaking and listening activity- Discuss how you and your child have changed as you have grown up. Home reading Children will have books to share at home, (reading scheme books and library books). Please record any reading in their reading diaries. The children will change their reading books every Tuesday and Friday. Library books will be changed on Tuesdays. Please make sure your child has their book bag in school every day. Maths While out and about with your child practise: counting forwards and backwards in ones recognising numbers to 20 Measuring yourselves or parts of you, e.g. arm, leg, etc… Recognising small coins Topic Draw and label your body to be used on display in our x-ray role play. Please bring in by Monday 3rd October. All About Me Bag Each Friday one child from each class will bring home the class “All About Me Bag”. The children are to collect items that will tell the class about themselves. This will be shared on the following Friday. Assemblies The themes for our assemblies this term are: ‘New Beginnings’, ‘Golden Rules” and “Harvest” Children will have the opportunity to share in whole school assemblies and together as a class. We have a celebration Assembly on Friday to celebrate birthdays and award our stars of the week. P.E. Will be every Wednesday and Thursday. Please make sure your child has their P.E. kit in school. Please ensure your child has suitable outdoor kit, including shoes all of which is named. Future Dates Wednesday 28th September – Science Day – Dress as a scientist
