How will achieve the lesson:
Lesson Objective: Investigate less developed, developing and developed countries? Look at how we measure development in countries. How will achieve the lesson: Understand what development means? Look at development indicators in 10 countries. Sort these countries out into 3 categories and locate them on a world map. Analyse the location, is there a pattern?

*Can you think of any indicators?*
What are development indicators? There is not a single way to calculate the level of development of a country. Geographers use a series of development indicators to compare the development of one country to another. *Can you think of any indicators?*

How do we Measure Whether Countries are ‘North’ or ‘South’
We can measure whether countries are developed or developing, or are ‘North’ or ‘South’, by comparing various statistics from countries. One way we are able to do this is to analyse the annual statistics prepared by the United Nations (UN). What is United Nations?
12
The UN is an international organisation of countries that was created to promote world peace and cooperation. It allows countries to cooperate to solve world problems, such as poverty and disease, and coordinates economic and social progress in developing countries.
13
Once a year the UN published the Human Development Index (HDI)
14
The HDI is an index measuring average achievement in THREE basic dimensions of human development –
1) Life expectancy 2) Literacy rates and school / university enrolments 3) Gross Domestic Product per capita. These statistics related to these three areas for most countries in the world are then calculated and ranked to produce the final HDI results.

Does the population have access to medical care?
Health Does the population have access to medical care?
16
What type of industry dominates?
LEDCs focus on primary industries, such as farming, fishing and mining. MEDCs focus on secondary industries, such as manufacturing. The most advanced countries tend to focus more on tertiary or service industries, such as banking and information technology.
17
Do the population have access to education?
Is it free? What level of education is available (ie primary, secondary or further/higher education)?

Using the indicators work out
Using the data from the countries identify if you think the country is developed, developing or less developed? Once you have decided try to order the countries into a rank of where you think they would come – from best to lowest.

You identify one LEDC, MEDC.
Using your sheets of country data, compare two contrasting countries. Explain why one is an LEDC OR MEDC. Success Criteria: You identify one LEDC, MEDC. You use at least two indicators and use statistics to compare them. You explain why one is an LEDC and one is MEDC Sentence Starters: Using the sheet of country data, I can see that …………. and ……………. are contrasting countries. The first indicator that shows this difference is…………. The second indicator is………… ………….. is an LEDC. I can tell this because………………. ………….. is an MEDC because……… Finally, …………
