GENITAL HERPES Cause: Herpes Simplex Virus
Symptoms: 2 – 12 days after contact, one or more fluid filled blisters open to sores. May be painful, swollen glands. Treatment: There is no cure. Medications are available to reduce symptoms. Infected persons can infect another even if on medication and no symptoms. Complications: Pregnant female with herpes may infect baby and may cause birth defects.

CHLAMYDIA Cause: Bacteria
Symptoms: days after contact. There may be NO symptoms OR mild symptoms such as discharge or burning when urinating. Treatment: Antibiotics Complications: Partner may pass on the disease with no symptoms. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) Tubal pregnancy Sterility

GENITAL WARTS (HPV) Cause: Human Papilloma Virus (a group of over 60 viruses) Symptoms: Six weeks to eight months after contact, small bumps (warts) appear. Can be flat or cauliflower – like clusters. Treatment: Removed with chemicals Frozen off with liquid nitrogen Burned off with heat or laser More than one treatment may be needed

GENITAL WARTS (HPV) continued . . .
Complications: Can grow on the penis, in the vagina or the rectum. In the vagina, they may not be seen. People may not know they have it. Warts can be removed, but the virus may stay in the body and could spread to others. HPV can cause cancer of the cervix in women. Can be transmitted to baby at birth.

WHAT IS AIDS? A Acquired I Immune D Deficiency S Syndrome
You need to do something to get it. AIDS is preventable. You get it through contact with another human’s blood or sexual body fluids. A healthy immune system prevents you from developing certain diseases. Weakened immune system. AIDS gradually breaks down the immune system by attacking the T “helper” cells (CD4 cells). A group of symptoms – caused by opportunistic infections that would not be able to affect someone with a healthy immune system.

HOW IS HIV SPREAD? The only way to become infected with HIV is by contact with certain body fluids. Blood Semen Vaginal fluids Mother to child (Prenatal or breast milk) HIV is not spread by any of the following: touching or hugging closed mouth kissing holding or hugging sneezing or coughing animals or insects

WHAT CAN YOU DO? If you think you have an STD, go to a health care provider or the local health department office. STD’s can cause serious health problems, even death. When found early and treated, most STD’s can be cured. EVERYONE WHO IS SEXUALLY ACTIVE IS AT RISK !! ABSTINENCE IS THE ONLY 100% SURE WAY NOT TO GET AN STD!
