6. Our School day Yate Academy
Meet and greet – students are met at the door each morning by staff
Whole school assembly – the whole school are met by their tutors and the senior leadership team. Uniform, equipment and homework is checked so that all students are ready for the day. Thought for the day is shared and messages of celebration are conveyed
Reading and intervention – students are read to by their tutor. During the course of a year students will have read 5 classic novels (more about this later)
Learning and lunch – each lesson starts with 10 questions from the knowledge organisers (more about that later)
DEAR time - this stands for Drop Everything and Read. Students read their own books for the last twenty minutes of the day

Reading books aloud to children stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world. It helps them develop language and listening skills and prepares them to understand the written word. ...

Students who scored 90% better than their peers on reading tests, read for more than 20 minutes a day – exposing them to 1.8 million words a year.
Students who scored at fifty percentile, read on average only 4.6 minutes a day – exposing them to 282,000 words per year.
Students in the ten percentile for reading, read less than 1 minute per day – exposing them to 8,000 words per year.  (It would take them one year to read as many words as what a good reader would read in two days.)

Week 6 Assessment week for all subjects ( we will let you know when this is via the bulletin)
Week 7 Bridging week - a week where students work on gaps that have been identified in their knowledge
Week 1 Reports sent home – In years 7 and 8 these will let you know the areas your child will need to work on in each subject

Your child will bring home a booklet of knowledge Organisers.
These knowledge organisers let you and your child know what is being taught each module.
They are to be used each night to complete the self quizzing homework ( see later)
They are worth reading through regularly as it will help the facts stick !

Literacy and Numeracy Programme
Yate Academy is working to ensure that every child is heading toward above expected progress this will help to ensure accelerated success when they tackle subjects like humanities.
We use a variety of packages that helps accelerate students whatever level they are currently at. Tasks are set according to where they are in their reading and maths and aim to constantly push students forward. The Pixl Code works on improving reading and spelling so that students are ready to read exam papers which require students to have a reading age of 16

The programme seeks to develop and refine students’ core skills in reading and maths so that students are fluent in these areas.

We are wholly committed to ensuring that your child receives direct access to high quality teaching in these areas.

Next week ALL students will be assessed on their reading and mathematical ability
From this we will devise an individual programme for our students
Students will be assessed regularly to look at impact

You will need to sign the planner to say that they have completed the reading

21. Knowledge Organisers Yate Academy High Standards, High Expectations
Each night your child will choose a subject they have the next day and write themselves 10 questions from the knowledge organiser. This will be followed by the answers written on the next page of the planner.
For example on this knowledge organisers they may write.
What did William’s army wear? Answer = Chain mail armour.
They don’t have to pick ten questions from one subject they may do a few questions from all 5 subjects they have the following day.
In each lesson they will get 10 questions about the knowledge organiser and previous learning.

Your child should be reading the knowledge organiser at home ready for the next lesson

A student will pick a subject they have the next day that they feel they should work on.
Then will then write themselves 10 quiz questions (stick them in or write in the box)
Write out the answers.
Then learn the answers.
Its just like revision and you can check it
