Supporting children’s agency
Provocations: The story “A nice walk in the jungle” and a shed snake skin were presented to the children at morning group time The following slides document a project which began when a child had an exciting story to tell about a snake following the introduction of the snake skin provocation. Supporting children’s agency
2
The setting was a semi-rural community in the southern highlands of NSW. Lots of children had ‘snake tales’ to tell and we thought it would be fun to put them all together in a slide show using the computer. The children were invited to look through the snake books to find images that best represented their own story or which inspired them to want to learn more and add some snake facts to our collection. We then looked for similar images on the internet and added them to the stories and facts.
3
The educators used the opportunity to discuss the dangers of snakes in the environment.
The educators also had conversations with the children about the difference between made up stories (fiction) and true stories (fact) with the question, “why did the author write this book” We decided “A nice walk in the jungle” was written to make us laugh and to teach us that when we have something important to say we should keep saying it until someone listens
