2. Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth.
O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations, Through Christ Our Lord, Amen.

3. Sunday 5th February 2017 5th Sunday in OT Matthew 5:13-16
Jesus said to his disciples, ‘You are the salt of the earth. But if salt becomes tasteless, what can make it salty again? It is good for nothing, and can only be thrown out to be trampled underfoot by men.
‘You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill-top cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub; they put it on the lamp-stand where it shines for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine in the sight of men, so that, seeing you good works, they may give the praise to your Father in heaven.’

4. Literal meaning Where? Matthew 5 – up the hill
When? Straight after the Beatitudes
What? The first teaching of Jesus: the Sermon on the Mount
Who? Jesus, joined by his disciples (and the crowds?)
How? Jesus makes two comparisons to qualify his listeners
Why? Reveals something about them

5. Salt seasoning of food (Luke 14:25-35)
preservation from corruption (Mark 9:42-50)
purification (2 Kings 2:19-22)
Baptismal salt: given to catechumens / babies (EF)
Blessed salt: in the preparation of holy water

Receiving light

11. Mary, Virgin and Mother,
you who, moved by the Holy Spirit,
welcomed the word of life
in the depths of your humble faith:
as you gave yourself completely to the Eternal One,
help us to say our own “yes”
to the urgent call, as pressing as ever,
to proclaim the good news of Jesus.
Mother of the living Gospel,
wellspring of happiness for God’s little ones,
pray for us.
