Audience (Who?) Purpose (to inform, to describe, to persuade, to entertain) Form (What does it look like?) Gather info (diagrams, list of thoughts, graphic organizer, etc.) Organize (chronological, order of importance, spatial, order of familiarity)

Topic and Limit Topic Narrative Descriptive Persuasive Expository
Your topic will be one of the following types of writing: Narrative Descriptive Persuasive Expository Once you’ve selected your topic, narrow it. For example: Topic: Personal Narrative Limited Topic: Trip to Six Flags

Audience (Who?) Match ideas and language to your intended audience
If you are writing or talking to a friend, you can use informal language. If you are writing or talking to an adult, or someone you don't know well, you should use formal language. For Example: 7th graders, Mr. Bronn, Your Best Friend

Purpose of a Personal Narrative
To Entertain: Gives the reader something to enjoy. It includes colorful language to help your ideas come alive on the page. (Personal Narrative) To Inform: Provides interesting details and facts to hold an audience’s attention. Sharing what you know lets your audience learn about them. (Personal Narrative)

Other Purposes To Describe: To create a clear picture of something or how to do something. To Persuade: Share opinions and try to convince a reader to think or act a certain way. Opinions are statements of what you believe. The writer always uses facts to back up an opinion.

Form What will the published copy look like? Specific Instructions such as: Must include dialogue 1 page in length

Gather Use graphic organizers, lists, diagrams, etc. to organize your thoughts.

Organize Chronological: arrange the events in the order in which they happened (Personal Narrative) Order of Importance: Begin with what means the most and move on to what means the least Spatial: arrange the details in order of location Order of familiarity: Starting with what you know the best
