1
CELL STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION
SPI Identify and describe the function of the major plant and animal cell organelles.
2
CELL STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION
What are the different parts that make up a cell? By the end of this lesson, you should be able to compare the structure and function of cell parts in plant and animal cells.
3
VOCABULARY TERMS Define each term and write a complete sentence using each term. 1. Cytoskeleton 2. Cell Wall 3. Mitochondrion 4. Ribosome 5. Vacuole 6. Chloroplast 7. Endoplasmic Reticulum 8. Lysosome 9. Golgi Complex/Apparatus 10. Nucleus 11. Cytoplasm 12. Chloroplast Chloro=green plast=structure
4
CELLS All organisms are made up of one or more cells.
There are two types of organisms Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes Prokaryotic cells do not have a nucleus or membrane-bound organelles. Eukaryotic cells have membrane-bound organelles including a nucleus. Both plants and animals are eukaryotes.
5
TWO TYPES OF CELLS Prokaryote cells
Its DNA is located in the cytoplasm Prokaryote cells include all bacteria and archaea.
6
TWO TYPES OF CELLS Eukaryote cells
Animals, plants, and fungi are eukaryotes. All multicellular organisms are eukaryotes.
7
WHAT ORGANELLES ARE FOUND IN PLANT AND ANIMAL CELLS
Organelles- the cell structures that carry out specific jobs in cells. Nucleus-is an organelle in eukaryotic cells that contains the cell’s genetic material. DNA=Deoxyribonucleic acid, is stored in the nucleus. DNA-is genetic material that contains information needed for cell processes.
8
PARTS THAT PROTECT AND SUPPORT THE CELL(ANIMAL AND PLANT)
Cell Membrane-every cell is surrounded by a cell membrane. Cell membrane acts as a barrier between the inside of a cell and the cell’s environment. Cell membrane protects the cell and regulates what enters and leave the cell. Cytoplasm-is the region between the cell membrane and the nucleus that includes fluid and all of the organelles. Cytoskeleton-is a network of protein filaments that gives shape and support to cells.
9
WHAT ORGANELLES ARE FOUND IN PLANT AND ANIMAL CELLS
Ribosomes-are the smallest organelles in plant and animal cells. Ribosomes makes proteins. They make proteins by putting together chains of amino acids using instructions encoded in the cell’s DNA. Endoplasmic reticulum-(ER) is a system of folded membranes that serve as passageways in a cell. The ER assists in the production, processing, and transport of proteins and in the production of lipids. ER is smooth or rough; Rough ER has ribosomes attached to its membrane, while smooth ER does not.
10
WHAT ORGANELLES ARE FOUND IN PLANT AND ANIMAL CELLS
Golgi Apparatus/Complex-attaches proteins to carbohydrates(sugars and starches) and lipids(fats). Help make and package materials to be transported out of the cell. Vacuole-a fluid-filled vesicle found in the cells of most animals, plant, and fungi. Plant cells also have a large central vacuole that stores water. Central vacuoles full of water help support the cell. Vacuole- may contains enzymes, nutrients, water or wastes.
11
WHAT ORGANELLES ARE FOUND IN PLANT AND ANIMAL CELLS
Mitochondrion/mitochondria-breaks down sugar and releases energy. This process is called cellular respiration.
12
PLANT CELL Cell Wall- a rigid structure that surrounds the cell membrane. Cell wall provide support and protection to the cell. Large Central Vacuole- is a fluid-filled vesicle found in the cells of most animals, plants, and fungi. Plant cells also have a large central vacuole that stores water. Central Vacuoles full of water help support the cell.
13
PLANT CELLS Chloroplasts- organelles where photosynthesis occurs.
Photosynthesis is the process by which cells use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to make sugar and oxygen. Chloroplast are green because they contain a green pigment called Chlorophyll. Chlorophyll- absorbs the energy in sunlight. This energy is used to make sugar, which is then used by mitochondria to make ATP. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is a nucleoside triphosphate, a small molecule used in cells as a coenzyme.
