Higher Graphic Communication Final assignment Student self assessment
Students should use this powerpoint to self assess the pieces of work they wish to submit for the outcomes covered in the final assignment. Students should attempt to ensure that they satisfy each and every item listed before submitting work for marking.
3
Preliminary Production Promotional 10 pages maximum
Research and analysis Initial ideas CAD modelling DTP Promotional thumbnails Production Promotional CAD – component drawings CAD – assembly drawings 3 or 4 sheets DTP – poster Environment 10 pages maximum
4
Analysis and research 4 marks
Include the initial brief and make reference to it through out the page. Create a specification for graphic items that you will be producing to satisfy the brief. 4 marks Ensure the target market is clearly identified and explain through out how your choices are influenced by this. Include information about existing gyms and existing desks. Explain the features that are appealing and why? Make reference to the library component provided. Provide a list of the various types of graphic you will be producing to satisfy the brief. Discuss various fonts including “Birth of a Hero”. Explain your choice of fonts justifying against the brief. Discuss the logo provided and explain any alterations you might choose to do and why. Discuss your choice of colour schemes – justify. Make EXPLICIT reference to the 3Ps. Explain which graphics you will be producing in each area.
5
Analysis and research - tips
4 marks In addition to the elements included on the previous page. Make it very clear which drawings you are going to be producing. Group them in to the 3Ps. Explain why you are doing the drawings making reference to the brief.
6
(for production drawings and promotional documents or publications)
Preliminary graphics (for production drawings and promotional documents or publications) 15 marks The majority of the marks (12) in this section are derived from the Ideas and CAD modelling plan sheets. Planning effective multipage DTP documents. This is done later and is dealt with in a separate slide
7
(for production drawings and promotional documents or publications)
Preliminary graphics (for production drawings and promotional documents or publications) 15 marks (= ) Include a range of graphic techniques – manual and/or electronic Must have sufficient technical detail to inform development of CAD work. Must contain some complex features. Include a range of dimensioned sketches which are annotated AND CAD modelling plans. Technical detail such as: exploded views, sectional views, cut-aways, assembly details, enlarged details, range of movement and other relevant technical details All work is done showing various line types, views are correctly laid out, all dimensions done to British Standards Rendered 2D and 3D components and/or assemblies. Both CAD modelling plans and pictorial views of desks can be used. A selection of very good quality orthographic sketches AND pictorial views that are design driven.
8
Preliminary graphics - Tips
(for production drawings and promotional documents or publications) 15 marks (= ) Add little people in your sketches to show proportion. Your ideas must include complex features (helix, extrude along path, array, loft, mirror etc) Include orthographic, isometric, 2 point perspective and exploded with little sketches and details/sections in the modelling plan. Rendering can be done using pencils, marker pens and any other media – NOTE rendering is important. Work to BSI in all sketches and drawings. Images can be scanned and inserted in to a master page. If you can’t sketch/render then do your ideas in Inventor (but do not add dimensions etc.)
9
Preliminary graphics – DTP planning
(for production drawings and promotional documents or publications) 15 marks (= ) Include a range of graphic techniques – manual and/or electronic Consider a range of effective layouts. Have you been thorough in your planning activities? Can use thumbnails and/or more fully worked up visuals (electronically perhaps). Justification of design elements and DTP features relates specifically to the brief. Show how you have a good understanding of the impact of the layout. Include annotations on your layouts describing the features and justifying their impact and inclusion. NOTE: This work will be completed after the CAD production drawings have been done.
10
Preliminary graphics – DTP planning - tips
(for production drawings and promotional documents or publications) 15 marks (= ) Make it clear that you understand how the design elements and principles have made an impact on your layouts. Explain clearly how DTP techniques you have used have enhanced your designs. Make sure that all your designs and layout refer back to the design brief.
11
Production drawings and CAD models 30 marks
The majority of the marks (27) in this section are derived from the production drawings sheets. The assembling of the environment and the inclusion of supplementary models is worth 3 marks. Note that the environment is also allocated marks in the promotional documents section.
12
Production drawings and CAD models 30 marks (=27+3)
The assembly of components is correct in all instances. All constraints correct with no misalignments. Production drawings and CAD models 30 marks (=27+3) Examples of complex features include: complex profiles, application of 3D features(such as, tapers, off-sets, helices and threads, and projected geometry), and edits, including: chamfers, fillets, shells, mirrors, and arrays. All components and assemblies demonstrate a very good skill in draughting and modelling. Communicating complex details and features is done very well. A minimum of 3 different CAD modelling techniques (eg extrude, revolve, loft, sweep, helix). This is based on the CAD modelling plan.
13
Production drawings and CAD models 30 marks (=27+3)
Orthographic views(x3) from components and assemblies have been produced. Appropriate pictorials created. Work should show a high of level quality in terms of scale, accuracy and clarity of drawings. Drawings need to have enough information to allow the desk to be manufactured. Sufficiently dimensioned, suitable hidden detail, centre lines and fold lines. All work adheres to BS8888. Third angle, view titles, scale, tolerances and title block. All line types and dimensions are correct. 2D and/or 3D work contains 3 or more examples of relevant additional information to support manufacture. e.g. exploded views, sectional views, enlarged detail, range of movement. Should be correctly annotated.
14
Production drawings and CAD models 30 marks (=27+3)
Assembling an environment The environment is assembled with the main model AND different supplementary models. Models should be appropriately scaled and placed in context.
15
Production drawings and CAD models - Tips 30 marks (=27+3)
In addition to your orthographic and pictorial views make sure you include appropriate sub assemblies, relevant details with dimensions. Include a parts list that references an exploded view.
16
Promotional documents or publication
21 marks The marks for this section are split between the DTP document and the environment produced.
17
Promotional documents or publication 21 marks (=12+9)
The first 12 marks are for the DTP item that you produce. Document incorporates DTP features applied with high level of skill and significant visual impact. Should use several from: colour, contrast, unity, depth, dominance, alignment, text wrap, flow along a path, bleed, transparency, drop shadow, rotate, justification, reverse, columns, gutter, caption, header, footer. In response to ALL requirements of the brief a DTP document is produced.
18
Promotional documents or publication 21 marks (=12+9)
The second 9 marks are for the environment Illustration techniques applied to the 3D environment are fully relevant and demonstrate very good skills in application. Use of light on form such as: fills, highlights, shadows and textures (appropriately scaled) to improve the look of the model. Illustrations used in the 3D model enhance the environment and fully support the requirements of the brief. Use of logos, fonts, typeface, colour schemes and any other information supplied from the brief.
19
Promotional documents or publication - Tips 21 marks (=12+9)
Ensure that all items are constrained correctly. Make sure you include a decal in the environment. Make sure the light level is good (not too light or too dark). Include some existing library parts (eg from GrabCAD)
