1 Unit 2: Population & Migration
Day 1: Introduction

2 Wednesday, Sept. 14 Directions: Today, we are going to practice writing FRQs using content from our last unit. Pick up an FRQ practice sheet on the front table. Read through the tips & tricks of writing FRQs. Then, look at question 1. What is it asking you to do? Make notes beside the question. Then, using the tips above. Write your answer on the line.

3 Writing an FRQ Read the question 2 or 3 times. Know exactly what you are looking for! Pay attention to what the question is asking you to do: identify, explain, define, compare and contrast. Pre-write! Organize your thoughts before actually writing up. The more information you can give, the better! Don’t get fancy! Nice writing is awesome but do not get caught up on mechanics and grammar. Everything you write should address the question! NO FLUFF! Get to point – say it! Label your answers. Write it for your grandmothers 

4 Introduction to Population
Directions: Take out a sheet of paper and set up as shown below…. What is the most (for you) compelling part of the video? Why? Are there too many people on the planet? The video says that we don't need space, we need balance. What/where is this balance most needed?

5 POPULATION PARTY! As honored guests of the World Population and Health Conference, you have been invited to attend a pre-conference mixer. The conference has brought you here in order to understand the population and health challenges facing your state (country). While the conference begins tomorrow, today is an opportunity for you to meet the other attendees and see what types of issues other states are dealing with and at the same time get to know some new faces! Directions: Read and BECOME YOUR CHARACTER! You must stay in character throughout this activity. ALL EXCHANGES must be done with oral communication. In other words, you cannot simply copy role sheets. Remember this is a party; you should proceed as if you are meeting someone for the first time. Circulate around the room (it's a party!) and meet the other characters. You have 25 minutes to meet 10 people, so don’t linger too long with any one guest! There are ‘repeats’, so if you have already met someone, move on! Do not worry about key word definitions! Simply write them down, we will do an activity with this later!

6 Country Project Directions: Each student will select a country that is recognized by the United Nations. Every student must select a different country! The United States cannot be chosen. You will need approval by Mrs. Allensworth before beginning. As we go through the units this semester, you will collect data on your country. The data will be used to examine the spatial patterns within your country, within your world region and in comparison with other countries.

7 Where are people living? And why?
Directions: For the remaining class period, you will work with a partner to analyze where people are living in the world! Use the density and physical maps to help you answer the questions on the worksheet. What is not finished in class is homework! Work hard!! SPATIAL PERSPECTIVE: Spatial dimension of human experience – space and place! The essential issue of whereness—embodied in specific questions such as, “Where is it? Why is it there?”
