1 “Laudato Si’, mi’ Signore” – “Praise be to you, my Lord”
“Laudato Si’, mi’ Signore” – “Praise be to you, my Lord”. In the words of this beautiful canticle Saint Francis of Assisi reminds us that our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life, and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us. (LS 1) This sister now cries out to us because of the harm we have inflicted on her by our irresponsible use and abuse of the goods with which God has endowed her. (LS 2) Saint Francis, faithful to Scripture, invites us to see nature as a magnificent book in which God speaks to us and grants us a glimpse of his infinite beauty and goodness. (LS12)

4 We are not God. The earth was here before us and it has been given to us… The biblical texts [in Genesis] … tell us “to till and keep the garden of the world”. ‘Tilling’ refers to cultivating, ploughing or working, while ‘keeping’ means caring, protecting, overseeing and preserving. This implies a relationship of mutual responsibility between human beings and nature. Just as the different aspects of the planet – physical, chemical and biological – are interrelated, so too living species are part of a network which we will never fully explore and understand.. Nature cannot be regarded as something separate from ourselves or as a mere setting in which we live. We are part of nature, included in it and thus in constant interaction with it.                                 (Laudato Si 67, 138, 139)

12 Creator God, bless the many churches, community centres and work clubs where basic needs are met and nourishment for body, mind and spirit is freely offered to those in need, especially families and children. All: LAUDATE OMNES GENTES
