Using the Library Core Skills Locate the main areas of stock for your subject including books, DVDs and journals areas of books and DVDs for your subject This question gives information about the classification of material used by the majority of libraries in the UK. The local guidance link on the question page leads to the University of Portsmouth's broad subject listing from which you can use to find out a precise classmark (also known as shelfmark). When visiting any library website/building look out for this type of guidance which will help you find your way to the most relevant stock. If you use several different libraries you may have to cope with subtle differences in the usage of the scheme but the broad numbers are likely to be similar.

Using the Library Core Skills Know how to apply for a photocopy of a book chapter or article You can apply for a photocopy of a book chapter or journal article from Distance Learning Support here. If it is available more quickly electronically we will normally refer you to where you may obtain it online. If you have a specific requirement for print provision do please contact us direct to highlight this for future applications. If it is required by your unit reading list please inform us so we may also mount an electronic copy for others to use on the reading list. Individual requests will be ed to you personally as quickly as our scanning programme allows. This service is available to both UK and overseas students but is limited by copyright and licensing restrictions (i.e. only one article from any one issue of a journal and no more than one chapter or 5% of any book (whichever is greater).

Using the Library Core Skills Understand how to apply for a print book within the UK & what alternatives are available inside & outside the UK You can request a hard copy of any book from a reading list not available to you electronically from our Document Delivery Service. You will be sent the first available copy wherever possible but at times of high demand you may only get a copy for 2 weeks (an extension for you to allow for postal delays). However in these circumstances where a book has been reserved by others we will charge fines at a rate of £1 per day for late return. Each book will initially have a wrapper with reminders about renewals, recall & fines. Unfortunately we do not post books out of the UK but we are happy to supply articles/chapters delivered as scanned pdfs for you to keep. Hint: Use Google Books previews to identify useful chapters and if an article/chapter is on a reading list please do inform us as we will also mount it online for others to use You may also like to investigate second hand purchase options on Amazon and Abe Books as these can be surprisingly cheap.

Using the Library Core Skills Identify guidance and comply with copyright law for copying printed materials One of the most common copyright questions we get asked is: Q. How much may I photocopy from books and journals? For private study or research current guidance from the British Library is that you may print, under “fair dealing”: • 5% or one chapter, whichever is the greater, of a book • one article from any one issue of a journal you can find further details here. Read the Copyright and Licenses section of our web pages to familiarise yourself with some other key issues. You will also find notices near most self service scanners and photocopiers you see in the libraries you use.
17
Using the Library Core Skills Identify where to ask for help The Library Enquiries Service (Tel.(+44 (0) ) deals with all enquiries, including those related to borrowing, queries about your library account, fines, and subject-related questions. Requests for Document Delivery - Ideal service for Distance Learners
Using the Library Core Skills Understand the difference between a reservation & a document delivery request & which you should use Requests for Document Delivery - Ideal service for Distance Learners Any books requested from Document Delivery are collected from the shelf if immediately available or reserved on your behalf. As soon as they are ready they are posted out to the requestor’s nominated address in strict order of receipt of requests. Books should arrive within 48 hours of posting. Reservations - This service is not as quick for Distance Learners A reservation will only be registered if every copy of the title reserved is out on loan & unavailable to collect immediately from the library shelf. The first copy of a reserved book returned will be captured by library staff and the reader waiting for it will be notified to collect it. It will be posted out to you if you contact us but will take longer. Hint: Items showing as Not-reservable are either electronic and therefore available to you online or have copies on the shelf available for loan so could be copied or posted immediately Wording amended for more emphasis

Using the Library Core Skills Identify guidance and comply with licensing copyright agreements for printing & using e-materials The copyright limits for printing from our e-resources are exactly the same as those for copying from a printed source: For private study or research current guidance from the British Library is that you may print, under “fair dealing”: 5% or one chapter, whichever is the greater, of a book One article from any one issue of a journal you can find further details here Our licences for the use of e-resources are generally for students to access for private study or research. You are contravening these licences if you redistribute material you have downloaded. When sharing useful sources with your colleagues give references. DO NOT post pdfs or print outs. Read Copyright and Licenses section of our web pages to familiarise yourself with some other key issues. You should also find notices near any publicly available self service scanners or photocopiers you may use.
