What is Matter? Matter – the stuff that makes up EVERYTHING in the known universe. It can be found in three different states Solid – atoms are tightly packed together. Definite shape and volume Liquid – atoms aren’t as tightly packed together. Definite volume; indefinite shape Gas – atoms that are loosely together. Indefinite volume and shape
4
Temperature Scales Celsius – based off the freezing and boiling point of water. (°C) Fahrenheit – based off the freezing point of human blood. (°F) Kelvin – based off of absolute zero. (K) We use degrees for everything except Kelvin.
5
Characteristic Properties
These properties NEVER CHANGE for a given substance and are used to identify unknown matter. Examples: hardness of materials, density, boiling point, melting point
6
Boiling Point Boiling Point - the temperature at which a substance boils. This is a change of state between liquid and gas Can tell the difference between liquids with the color.
7
Melting point Melting Point – temperature at which a substance melts.
This is a change of state between solid and liquid. Once again can tell the difference between metals of similar color by this.
8
Changes in Matter 2 types
Physical change – alter in the form of a substance, but not it’s identity or it’s chemical makeup. Ex: ripping, tearing, crumpling, changing states Chemical Change – one or more substances combining or decomposing to form new substances. Ex: burning wood, rusting of iron, caramelizing sugar
9
Types of Matter 2 types of matter
1. Mixture – consists of two or more substances that are mixed together but not chemically combined. Ex: Italian dressing, sand and iron filings Solution – ‘best mixed’ of all possible mixtures Solvent – the substance that does the dissolving Solute – the substance that gets dissolved
10
Types of Matter 2. Pure substances – made of only one kind of matter and has definite properties. Elements – substances that cannot be broken down into smaller substances by any chemical means. Ex: Gold, Silver, fluorine, chlorine Compound – a pure substance formed from chemical combinations of two or more different elements. Ex: water (H2O), Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
