The Hoopa Career & Technical Education Program approach to localized & individualized student services: Strengthening Student Success Conference 2016 Shared Responsibility for Student Success Strand: Civic Engagement and Social Justice Putting Community into Community College: Students can be lifted to success through the interests, supports, and investments of their communities. Through ongoing educational partnerships, human resource networks, and comprehensive student-centered learning opportunities, the staff of the Hoopa Career and Technical Education Program (HCATEP) have achieved consistently high levels of student success at the College of the Redwoods Klamath-Trinity Instructional Site. This presentation highlights the data, staff, and students of HCATEP, including the processes of sustaining community through student engagement, integrating services for all students, and honoring the community’s voice in postsecondary education visioning. By promoting students’ success, we facilitate their contributions to a sustainable local community. We meet students where they are upon program entry, develop authentic relationships with advisors, faculty, and support staff, and support students beyond the status quo, community member to community member. HCATEP staff and students will share their successes, challenges, and hopes for continuously improving community-driven postsecondary educational services. Largest land based tribe in California Population: 3,013, ~79% of which are AI/AN, ~1/3 of the population is under the age of 19 Of residents, ~66.2% are below the federal poverty level Unemployment rate: ~25% - ~24%

The Hoopa Valley Tribe governs the jurisdiction of the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation and is a complex tribal organization that provides multi-faceted programs and services through nearly 70 departments/programs and operates several tribal enterprises. The Hoopa Tribal Education Association is a Chartered Organization of the Hoopa Valley Tribal Council (Adopted 1999)

A program of the Hoopa Tribal Education Association HCATEP, CR-KTIS, Hoopa Fast Track Hoopa Career and Technical Education Program (HCATEP) Funded through the U.S. Department of Education’s Native American Career and Technical Education Program derived from the Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Applied Technology Education Act P.L A well established and accepted program of the community – HCATEP has served students for nearly two decades Expanding student support services to AI/AN CR-KTIS students
