Jesus dies for our sins (Passion) Jesus was raised from the dead (Resurrection) Each Gospel writer gives their own version of events NT Wright: “… this is more or less how it was”

1. Puzzling Moments – Puzzling Day
Jesus hurriedly buried before the Sabbath. Mary: Honour Jesus with proper burial Stone rolled away … assumption – grave robbers Tells Peter & John Puzzling picture – the linen cloths are still there. Peter “wondered” or “marvelled” (Lk 24:12) John “saw and believed” (v 8) They did not understand the Scriptures (v 9)

2. Revelation in the Room Jesus appears among them (v 19)
They are hiding … doors are locked. Jesus appears among them (v 19) Think of your response to shocking events For me there is a time of quiet … getting bearings. He passed through the doors & walls Jesus commissions his disciples.

3. Sent with Authority SENDING Jesus is our model.
Obedience (John 5:19, 15:14) Revealing the Kingdom (Witnessing) Sent to make the Father known (John 14:7-9; 17:17-20) Healing & Helping (Isa 61:1-2/Luke 4:18-19; John 14:12)

Jesus’ vindication guarantees our vindication.
3. Sent with Authority . . . FORGIVING Jesus offered forgiveness (Lk 5:20; 7:48) His purpose was to bring forgiveness & salvation (Jn 3:17) Jesus assigns authority to forgive to the church (v 23) Jesus’ vindication guarantees our vindication.

Living It We find our identity & purpose in Jesus’ death & resurrection. What does it mean to “be Christ to the world”? Like Jesus we are not “of” the world (Jn 17:16) Like Jesus we do only what the Father is doing (obedience) Like Jesus reveal the character of God (witness) Like Jesus heal, help, lay down our lives (sacrifice) Take God’s forgiveness into the world.
