Starter Dummies are used in simulated car crashes to study what might happen to passengers in a real crash. They are fitted with a range of measuring devices that track the motion of the dummies throughout the crash. By analyzing the data, scientists learn how injuries occur and how they can be prevented. What forces act on the crash-test dummy to slow its forward movement?

What is Newton’s Second law?
Essential Question What is Newton’s Second law?
4
2nd Law Lab
5
2nd Law Notes How fast the motion of an object changes depends on its mass and the force applied. The greater the force, the faster it will accelerate. The larger the mass, the slower it will accelerate. This is what Newton’s Second Law States.

Examples When you kick a beach ball, it flies through the air in the direction of the kick. If you drop something it falls down, the larger the mass the bigger the force on the ground when it hits.

Force Force is a push or pull on an object. Formula: F=m*a
Variables: Units: F- Force N-Newton = (kg*m/s2) m- mass kg a – acceleration m/s²
9
Force F = m*a List the other two ways to write the formula F m a
10
Practice Problems: KWFL chart Force
Directions: Answer the Force problems. You can do this with another partner. Using a KWFL. An object with a mass of 100 kg accelerates at a rate of 2.4 m/s2. What force is exerted on the object? A rolling object accelerates at 4.3 m/s2. The force on the object is 86 N. What is the mass of the object? What is the force exerted by a 10 kg toy car accelerating at 3 m/s2? What is the acceleration of a 1000 kg truck with 4000 N driving it?
