1 Autodesk Point Layout Detailed Demonstration
This brief presentation is meant to help demonstrate to customers who need a point creation solution, and are already using or have purchased Autodesk BIM 360, which contains Autodesk BIM 360 Field and Glue access. We’ll begin by getting a solid understanding of what Autodesk Point Layout is, what the construction field Layout process is like and the current challenges many customers face today, and the value a Model Based layout approach can deliver to their projects. We will then go through a brief demonstration of Point Layout that will show the value to the Construction Execution phase of your building projects. Presenter Name Presenter Title

2 Pre-construction Construction Execution Commissioning/Handover Autodesk® Point Layout is a point creation plugin and is part of the Autodesk BIM 360 Glue Project Based offering that integrates with Autodesk® Navisworks®, AutoCAD®, and Revit® software to help make construction field layout, QA/QC and as-built modeling faster and more accurate by direct export/import of BIM data to and from the field.

3 Field Layout An area of construction that contractors are really seeing the benefits of BIM is in Field Layout. The traditional workflow for laying out points is tedious. Construction personnel rely on tape measures and manual calculations to install points in the field. Small errors may be difficult to spot in a timely manner, leading to expensive rework and delays. And when conditions require changes from the design, there’s no fast, precise way to get the new points back into the model. Project teams must update the as-built model manually, creating risk of inaccuracy. By moving to a model based approach for field layout, construction companies can minimize a lot of these problems, as well as see notable improvements in their efficiencies in the field and accuracy of the layout information.

4 Getting BIM data in the field
Existing inefficiencies in field layout Time consuming, labor intensive and costly (rework) Control is not carried throughout the project Stake holders do not have confidence in trade layouts Not getting the installed field conditions back into the model (as-builts) There are several inefficiencies in today’s typical layout process; Coordinated system layout is not readily accessible to all building trades and often rely on third parties or other sub contractors or trades to establish; Inconsistencies in control lead to unpredictable field installations; and Lack of electronic as-builts on the project translate into error prone or manual entry of information. So how can we help fix these inefficiencies? By using a model based approach and BIM, we can create and distribute project control that is more flexible, reliable, and consistent across all trades and sub contractors, use robotic total stations for layout increasing the efficiency of layout, and layout multiple trades at the same time with fewer people. 5 Autodesk Point Layout What is it:
Create points within the BIM/CAD model and export/import coordinate data to the field making construction layout, QA/QC and as-built modeling faster and more accurate. Autodesk offers a solution that leverages both 2D and BIM data to help meet those challenges called Autodesk Point Layout. It is a part of the broad Construction Solution that can enable construction to create and manage a Model Based approach for Field Layout. With Point Layout our customers can create and manage field layout points from CAD and BIM data to: Help establish project wide control for all trades that is automated, customizable and encompasses all trades in all phases of construction; A more coordinated model-driven, field layout process offering full traditional or robotic total station integration; Enables a system for improved QA/QC better office-to-field & field- to-office efficiencies; Improved Owner As-Built models by collecting the information is real time and in digital formats to be directly imported and managed into the BIM and CAD models; While helping to reduce the time and cost of construction. Produce higher quality work while using less-man power & time on-site. Benefits: Help establish project wide control & collaboration across all trades More coordinated, model-driven field layout Improved QA / QC in the field Improved Owner As-Built models Help reduce time and cost of construction

6 Field Layout workflow with BIM 360
Create and Manage the Model Autodesk ® Navisworks ®* Create and Manage the Field Points Autodesk ® Point Layout Sharing Points w/ the Field Robotic Total Station** Manage Points From the Field Autodesk ® BIM 360 Field, Point Layout, Navisworks Let’s take a deeper look at the workflow for Field Layout using the Project Based Glue offering of software. CLICK We begin by leveraging Autodesk Navisworks Manage software to bring our project information specifically the Building Information Models, together to create a single aggregated model. This model can start in the Navisworks environment, leveraging the 50+ file formats supported for import into the environment. We could also open a Glue model directly in Navisworks from our central project database, continuing to leverage the single coordinated model from the extended team. Once we have our model, we then leverage Autodesk Point Layout to help create and manage the point information that is used for the construction layout in the field with a robotic total station. Unlike traditional paper based methods, creating layout points from the models, both manually and using the automated tools, we can quickly produce more accurate layout information that is used in the field, that is based on the latest models and project information. This helps to reduce errors and increase the field productivity. With all of the field points created, we can take that valuable data to the field, and leverage the latest in Robotic Total Station technology, to layout the points. By using this technology, we create a safer environment for the field personnel, support their productivity, and enable them to multi-task because they can be laying out components for the project, and at the same time, collecting as-built information. All with the same hardware and workflow. Continuing to leverage a model based workflow, the field personnel collect as-built information for work completed as they are laying out for new tasks. We then bring the as-built information back into our project, analyze for discrepancies, and take appropriate actions by utilizing Autodesk Point Layout and Autodesk BIM 360, to send the information to field personnel using a BIM 360 Field task. 8 Managing the Model with Navisworks
Here we are in Autodesk Navisworks Manage, where the Project team can pull together the models needed for layout.

9 Managing the Model with Navisworks
Deb, the team member responsible for creating the layout drawings typically, will now instead pull together the structure, mechanical and piping models needed to complete the layout for this project.

10 Managing the Model with Navisworks
Using the Project Based Glue access for Autodesk Point Layout, Deb can us Point layout as part of her BIM 360 access for this project, and is ready to begin the model based point creation process.

12 Managing the Model with Navisworks
Using the Autodesk Point Layout plugin to Navisworks, we have many options for creating and managing field points. Some of the more common capabilities Point Layout offers in Navisworks are the ability to import points, select points in the model, change the color and scale and much more. We’ll begin by placing random points.

13 Managing the Model with Navisworks
The place points tool is used to quickly add points to models wherever the person creating the layout deems necessary. This make it quick and easy to just select pieces of the model using intuitive snapping tools for edges, intersections and planes of the models.

14 Managing the Model with Navisworks
Note that Point Layout is automatically numbering these points, as well as adding descriptions and other valuable parameters beyond just an x, y, and z coordinate.

15 Managing the Model with Navisworks
Deb can also mark selections in the model, which allows her to create field points on a larger scale and from the model intelligence. Here she has placed points on these conduit stub ups by Top Center location.

16 Managing the Model with Navisworks
If Deb has a selection set, like here for all the Duct hangers in the project, she can also quickly mark each hanger location, again saving large amounts of time while ensuring a high level of accuracy for placing the points.

17 Managing the Model with Navisworks
With all of the critical locations in this project marked with points, Deb can now share the information with the field crew who will perform the layout out at the point of construction.

19 Managing the Model with Navisworks
The export points tool let’s Deb complete several tasks at once in order to share the layout information.

20 Managing the Model with Navisworks
First, she can choose the specific formatting needed to export the coordinates to the hardware being used in the field, such as coordinate order, units, precision, point codes to be used, file extension, etc. Once its set the way she needs, it’s a simple matter of running the export and getting the file needed to send to the Field for the Traditional or Robotic Total Station.

21 Managing the Model with Navisworks
Here we see that simple file exported that will be used in a robotic total station to perform the layout in the field.

22 Managing the Model with Navisworks
She can also use the BIM 360 Field integration to assign this set of layout points to the appropriate user or company as a task to perform. Deb simply selects the right Field project, sets some basic information like name, ID, category, and status, and then assigns the task for performing this layout to the right team member. Autodesk Point Layout does all the heavy lifting here, in that it exports the points to the desired file format, creates the BIM 360 Field Task, and attaches all the information needed.

23 Managing the Model with Navisworks
As well as the BIM 360 Field Task that was created in a calendar view inside BIM 360 Field.

24 Managing the Model with Navisworks
The Field user can dig into the details for the task, and verify that have all they need before going out to the field to perform the layout.

25 Managing the Model with Navisworks
Besides the point files attached, they can also add other important things like plans, photos, specifications etc. that they can leverage on the iPad with BIM 360 Field while doing the layout.

26 BIM 360 Glue: Field Layout Create & Manage the Model
Creating Points in the Model Sharing Points with the Field Manage Points Collected in the Field To complete the layout process, we will now see how to manage as-built information coming in from the field. Image courtesy of PCL Construction

27 Managing the Model with Navisworks
Autodesk Point Layout has a powerful capability to compare points. This enables Deb to now see any differences from the points that were sent out for layout, and any As-built data that was collected in the field. Here we get a list of the discrepancies found in the analysis, and can take action, such as zooming to see the point in context.

28 Managing the Model with Navisworks
With a clear understanding of what is happening between the model point and the one from the field, Deb can take action, like logging an issue for a Hanger that was installed outside of spec.

29 Managing the Model with Navisworks
Again Point Layout integrates directly with BIM 360, and he can log an issue right here for the offending points. The issue can be assigned to the appropriate team members for resolution, simplifying the QA QC process, and reducing the time it takes to integrate As-built information.
