1 Lesson 6-5: Synthetic Division
Objective: Students will use synthetic division to find quotients

2 Why Synthetic Division Less writing Uses addition
Setting Up Divisor must be of the form: x – a Use only “a” and coefficients of dividend Write in “zero terms” x – 2: a = 2 x + 3: a = -3

3 Steps Bring down Multiply diagonally Add Remainder = last addition Answer Numbers at bottom are coefficients Start with 1 degree less than dividend REPEAT

4 Example 1: (2x3 – 7x2 – 11x – 20) (x – 5)
so answer is 2x2 + 3x + 4 (remainder is 0) 10 15 20 2 3 4

5 Example 2: (2x4 – 30x2 – 2x – 1) (x – 4)
8 32 8 24 2 8 2 6 23 So the answer is 2x3 + 8x2 +2x + 6 + (the remainder is 23)

6 Try It 3: (x5 + x4 + x3 + x2 + x + 1) (x + 1)
