Can you guess what this is about…

GARBAGE! (and landfiLls too!)

What comes to your mind when you hear the word “landfill?”
WASTE THE DUMP NASTY GARGABE What about CLEAN…? Ponder this as we go through the presentation. What comes to your mind when you hear the word “landfill?” TRUCKS TRASH STINKY SEAGULLS

What happens to all of that trash Waste Management picks up every week
What happens to all of that trash Waste Management picks up every week? It doesn't just disappear into another universe: Each day, we all contribute to the local landfill. So now we are going to learn what happens to the trash after you throw it away!
6
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN A DUMP AND A LANDFILL
Basically there are two ways to bury trash; 1. In a garbage dump or; 2. In a landfill
7
A Garbage Dump is… An open hole garbage is buried A Landfill is… A carefully designed structure built into or on top of the ground trash is isolated from the surrounding environment.
8
HOW MUCH GARBAGE WE GENERATE
/per individul
9
WHAT THE HECK DOES THAT MEAN?!
It basically means that in Ontario we are simply throwing away 75% of our garbage and only 25% of our trash is being reused and/or recycled! YIKES!!
10
WASTE DISPOSAL BY PROVINCE
YIKES!! Note: Non-residential sources include waste from; industrial, institutional, commercial, construction, and demolition sources.
11
THE GARBAGE WE GENERATE
HELLO! When it is all said and done, how much garbage we generate can be easily explained by a pizza. No Wait!! Not BY a pizza, but THROUGH a pizza!
12
The Pizza-Pie Chart Paper = 37% Yard Trimmings = 12% Food Scraps = 11%
Plastics = 11% Metals = 8% Rubber, Leather, Textiles = 7% Glass = 6% Wood = 6% Other = 2%
13
HOW MUCH TRASH DO WE GENERATE?
On average, each man, woman, and child in North America makes about 4.5 lbs. of trash every day!! That comes out to more than 1,500 pounds per person, per year! Some of the solid waste is reused or recycled, but most of it is buried in landfills.
14
What is the Purpose of Landfills?
to bury the trash in such a way that it will be isolated from groundwater, will be kept dry, and will not be in contact with air. Under these conditions, trash will not decompose much. Therefore a landfill is not like a compost pile, where the purpose is to bury trash in such a way that it will decompose quickly.
15
Rather the landfill’s purpose is to stabilize the solid waste and to make it hygienic through proper storage.
16
HOW A LANDFILL WORKS In the next few slides we will explore the layers of a landfill. We will begin with the bottom section of the landfill.
17
Composite Liner System
- Geo Membrane *plastic layer *prevents the leachate from leaving the landfill and entering environment (Leachate = toxic liquid from garbage) - Compacted Clay *final leachate barrier
18
The Working Landfill - Waste
*compacted into layers *covered with soil to reduces odors and prevent scavengers. - Leachate Collection System *leachate filters through the landfill *collected through manholes to surface *disposed as toxic waste
19
The Composite Cap System
- A Drainage Layer *drains excess water from the cover *sand, gravel, or a thick plastic mesh - Geo Membrane *prevents water from entering the landfill *stops the escape of landfill gas (or stinky smells!)
20
The Protective Cover - Plants and Shrubs *Visually pleasing
*Prevents erosion of soil - Top Soil *Supports and maintains plant growth
21
In sum, we have four main sections of a landfill which you should be responsible for;
1. The Protective Cover **soil** 2. The Composite Cap System **drainage** 3. The Working Landfill **waste** 4. The Composite Liner System **geo membrane**
22
Diversions Diversions are basically a way to redirect or divert our garbage away from landfills. Most regions in Canada have a waste diversion program which encourages their local population to decrease their amount of trash
23
Diversions Egg Cartons Water bottles Batteries Cell Phones
What garbage do you produce at home that you could divert from our landfills? Often times diverting translates to making money! Batteries Cell Phones Shopping Bags
24
What are YOUR ideas?
25
You wouldn’t want anyone to steal your idea for…
WAIT!! Don’t tell me yet!! Keep it a secret!! Maybe tell one friend But that’s all… You wouldn’t want anyone to steal your idea for…
26
Open for Business Details coming SOON!

So get thinking on your diversion idea! I already have mine…
These tin-can receptors are going to be bigger than the iphone! …ok maybe not…
