2 The prevalence of allergic diseases such as atopic dermatitis (AD) is increasing. The goals of treatment include reducing symptoms and prolonging periods between flares. Epidermal barrier defects, immune dysfunction and environmental triggers may all contribute to the pathogenesis of AD. Topical corticosteroids continue to predominate as therapy. Antihistamines, antimicrobials, topical calcineurin inhibitors (TCIs), and systemic anti-inflammatory agents can also be used when needed. Proactive therapy with regular intermittent application of topical corticosteroids or calcineurin inhibitors is advocated in patients with frequent flares. Adjunctive treatments, which include wet dressings, phototherapy, as well as pre- and pro-biotics can also be considered for the treatment of AD.
