Many parts of the world speak English US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, England, Ireland There are differences: Pronunciations Vocabulary Spelling, punctuation, and mechanics Each variation is acceptable

6 Educational Differences
Formal Education – recognized variety of English STANDARD ENGLISH Strong vocabulary, word selection, proper pronunciation, correct grammar Sensitive to TONE Clear, correct, and sensitive English makes a favorable impression on others. What words should you NOT use?

7 Situational Differences
Change language to fit different situations: Business- Social- Casual- Situations determine whether a message should be spoken or written.

9 Communication The exchange of meanings between individuals through a common system of symbols. Any act by which one person gives to or receives from another person information about their needs, desires, perceptions, knowledge, etc. The exchange of information through spoken or written language and nonverbal cues.
