Students will identify vocabulary terms in the “Eleven” by Sandra Cisneros in the selection in Prentice Hall Literature Anthology. This task uses: Follow the directions below to complete the activity. You will listen to a cold read of the selection “Eleven” by Sandra Cisneros. To do this you will follow along in the Prentice Hall Literature Textbook on page . As you listen to the story, you will identify Vocabulary terms that are unfamiliar or unknown** You will write down these words on a sheet of paper in order to participate in a class discussion of the unfamiliar terms. The class will discuss words identified during cold read. Through the course of the discussion, you will use context clues to determine the meaning of the words. You will review vocabulary words from the discussion using flash cards in Study Mate. You should review several times in order to master the terms. You will complete one activity (Matching, Pick a Letter, Fill in the Blank) as the evaluation piece to determine mastery of the terminology. Be sure to show the teacher your score before you close out the activity to receive credit for the assignment. Common Core/NG Standard(s): L.6.4 Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 6 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies. L.6.4a Use context (e.g., the overall meaning of a sentence or paragraph; a word’s position or function in a sentence) as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase. L.6.4b Use common, grade-appropriate Greek or Latin affixes and roots as clues to the meaning of a word (e.g., audience, auditory, audible). L.6.4c Consult reference materials (e.g., dictionaries, glossaries, thesauruses), both print and digital, to find the pronunciation of a word or determine or clarify its precise meaning or its part of speech. L.6.4d Verify the preliminary determination of the meaning of a word or phrase (e.g., by checking the inferred meaning in context or in a dictionary). White Middle School Grade Level/Subject: 6th Grade ELA (Gifted) Special Directions/Considerations: Step 1 - Teacher will have students listen to the selection utilizing the Audio Library provided with Prentice Hall Teaching Materials Step 2 – Teacher will input selected terms in Study Mate Step 2 - Teachers have three options to complete this step. 1) Teacher can identify terms within the story that are unfamiliar to students; 2) Teacher can identify terms from the Prentice Hall Vocabulary Teaching Guide that he/she feels are critical to understanding the selection; or 3) The students can list words that are unfamiliar to them and through discussion and context clues can identify the meaning. Activity Evaluation: Students will use iPad or computer to complete chosen Study Mate Activity. Upon completion, students will show teacher score. If student scores below 80%; they will be required to review terms again and retest. Prerequisites for students: Text being used (from the Prentice Hall aligned lessons) “Eleven” in Prentice Hall Literature Book; Terms from Vocabulary Lesson in Prentice Hall lesson plans.
