2. Read Naturally Overview
The Read Naturally Strategy combines the three powerful, research-proven strategies of teacher-modeling, repeated reading, and progress monitoring to create an effective tool that individualizes instruction and improves reading proficiency.

3. The Read Naturally strategy
Teacher modeling helps a student learn new words and master others as well as learn proper pronunciation, expression, and phrasing.
Repeated reading helps a student master difficult words, increase accuracy, and improve expression to become a fluent reader.
Progress monitoring involves the student in the learning process, motivates the student to improve, and increases reading achievement.

4. Read Naturally Student View
This is the story selection screen. By default, students are shown 12 stories at a time and then a second set of 12 once the first set is completed. All RN stories are nonfiction.

5. Open the Read Naturally software by clicking on the icon in your dock
Open the Read Naturally software by clicking on the icon in your dock. If you don’t have the icon, click on Hard Drive > Applications Folder. Then scroll down to Read Naturally and drag the icon into your dock to create a shortcut.

6. Once RN is running, look at the school name listed here
Once RN is running, look at the school name listed here. You will need the admin password for that school. Contact your Read Naturally person in your building for this information. If you have never logged in, you will be asked to select your school from a pull-down menu. Select your school and then enter the admin password.

7. Enter the password for your school, then click Enter.

8. Creating a teacher account

9. 1. Click the Teachers tab.
2. Type your last name and click Find.

10. Click on your name. It will turn blue. Then click the EDIT button.

11. If you did not find your name, you will need to create a teacher account for yourself. Click the add button. Enter your name and create a password. Click save.
Here you can see your password and/or change it. If you make any changes, click save.

12. Click Quit.

13. Now you will login as a teacher
Now you will login as a teacher. Enter the password for your teacher account and click Enter.

14. Creating Classes

15. Notice that the SCHOOL tab is now gray
Notice that the SCHOOL tab is now gray. Teachers do not have access to other schools. Only by logging in as an administrator can you change schools.
We will create a class first. You cannot assign students to your caseload unless you first create a class. Click the CLASSES tab.

16. Click ADD. The Class Name box will appear.
Enter a class name.

18. We will now create a student
We will now create a student. Most of the time, you will not have to do this as students are created for you.
Click on the STUDENTS tab.
Click Add

19. 1. Enter the first and last name from your hand out.
2. You may leave Student ID blank for training, but you would normally enter the S# of the student. Please select Grade 5 and enter the password for the student from your hand out. Student password is their S#.
3. Select the class name you created.
4. Click SAVE

22. We will now place the student you created.
Click the Students tab.
Type in the student’s last name.
Click Find

23. Click on the student’s name. It will turn blue.
Click Place.

24. This screen will appear
This screen will appear. Typically, you will go back two grade levels from your student’s current grade.
Select a Placement Testing Level. It will turn blue.
Click Next.

25. When you are ready, click Start
When you are ready, click Start. (In reality, the student would read the passage aloud while you count errors.)
When the bell sounds, click on the word last word the student read.
This box will appear. Enter 3 for the number of errors you counted.

26. If your student reads above the WCPM for the Placement Range, the software will recommend you keep testing. If so, click next.

27. Select the next level.
Click Next.

28. When your student reads within the Placement Range for a level, the software will ask you to select a level. You will only have the choice of Sequenced Levels.
Click on the Sequenced Level recommended by the software.
Click Next.
The software automatically sets a reading rate goal based on the student’s reading rate.

29. Modifying Story Options

30. To view or modify Story Options, first click on the student’s name from the class list. It will turn blue. Then click the Story Options tab.

31. 1. From this screen you can see the goal, level, and other story options that can be customized for each student. These options can be turned off by deselecting the blue check mark. Always remember to click SAVE after making any changes.
2. Click the Advanced tab.

32. Any current or completed stories show up in this box.
This shows that all timings are 1 min. You can also click Teacher Required to have cold timing teacher-led. This is useful when students are new to the program and might not know what words to click.
Click save when finished making changes.

33. Click Quit to return to the login screen.

35. To run a report, click the Reports button after logging into Read Naturally using your teacher password.

36. Click here to set your print range
Click here to set your print range. Typically you go back to the beginning of the school year, but you can also go back multiple years if needed.
Click the blue triangles to move by month.
Click the – or + to go back or forward by years.
When finished, click the green checkmark.

37. 2. Leave this set to Progress Report
1. Because you logged in using a teacher password, you will not see this pull-down menu. You will only see the students who have been assigned to your class. If you need to run reports for students not in your list, you will need to login using the Admin password for your school, then select the teacher from the list. Then you can generate reports for those students in his/her class.

If the student's Read Naturally level is several years below grade level.
After the student completes 24 stories.
If the student's Read Naturally level is close to grade level and the average cold-timing score is close to or exceeds the goal.
If the student's Read Naturally level is close to grade level and the average hot-timing score exceeds the goal by more than ten .
When raising the goal, only increase by 10 words at a time.
Never change the level and goal at the same time. Change one or the other!
