What Can You Do?

BE PROACTIVE Register your cell phone for UMD Alerts
Know your hazards and the protective actions to take (Actions tab on website) – Also get free coupons for Looney’s Pub and Mulligan’s Pub & Grill (Emergency Preparedness Pocket Guide) Know your resources (blue light phones, NITE Ride, UMD Guardian, emergency telephone numbers, etc.) (Resources tab on website) Build an emergency kit Help your friends become prepared! 10% OFF at Looney’s and Mulligan’s during the entire year! Register your cell phone
UMD ALERTS Register your cell phone The university’s way of communicating emergency information. Ensure that you have the appropriate information to make the best decision. Allow students to take out phones and register their cell phone numbers for UMD Alerts. You can login in with your UMD directory ID and password.

Go ahead and store the UMPD phone number in your cell phone!
COMMUNICATIONS Versus 911 – works from a cell phone (any provider) – goes directly to UMPD 911 – works from a campus phone – goes directly to UMPD. From a cell phone goes directly to PG Communications, which then transfers call to UMPD. Either way you will connect with someone who can assist you. Go ahead and store the UMPD phone number in your cell phone!

UMD GUARDIAN Safety app – available to all students, faculty and staff. Designed to allow users quick and easy contact with UMPD, and has additional features for increasing safety on campus. User can can initiate a safety timer session; place a panic (emergency) call to UMPD; or text a tip to UMPD. Additional information:

INSTALLATION Visit Apple or Google Play store and search for Rave Guardian Download and install Rave Guardian on device Ensure location and notifications are enabled Follow registration procedure Mobile device number UMD issued This is necessary to install the UMD-specific version of the app Set up Smart911 account Decide what information you wish to be provided to a 911 operator during an emergency (health, special needs, family contacts, Etc.)

INSTALLATION Sign in Read about the UMD Guardian (Rave Guardian) app features Now that UMD Guardian is installed, you can set up personal guardians using the Guardians button on the main page of the app.

SIRENS The sirens are to alert the public of a tornado warning.
There are four sirens mounted on top of buildings across campus. They are loud enough to alert the entire University and areas contiguous to the university community. What do the different siren tones mean? A steady tone that will sound for at least three minutes. All Clear: One short blast that will sound for less than 30 seconds.

MONTHLY TESTING The sirens and UMD Alerts are tested the first Wednesday of the month at 11:55 a.m. UMD Alerts will be sent to all UMD addresses and registered cell phone numbers.

SEEK FURTHER GUIDANCE When you receive an UMD Alert message or hear the siren, you should seek further information. UMD Alerts messages via and text message Social Media, i.e. Twitter @umpd @UofMaryland Follow guidance of officials

What Are The Hazards? In an emergency, refrain from non-emergency calls so that those who need to contact emergency services can, as well as keep lines available for first responders.

List of Actions are on website. For all emergencies, listen for and to alerts. Earthquake Drop, Cover, Hold on Tornado Go to an interior room in the lowest level of the building Do not pull the fire alarm Stay away from windows and glass Remain in safe location until the threat has ceased These are just a few that have either occurred or are possible to occur in our area. An expanded list of actions and protective actions are on the website, under the Actions tab. There is an annual Great Shakeout Earthquake Drill that we participate in where we test our emergency communications. Occurs in Oct.
