1. Sri Lanka is in the Indian Ocean, south of India. Sri Lanka is a tropical island. It has 1,000 miles of beaches. 2. Sri Lanka is the tea capital of the world. Sri Lanka is also known for its tourism and garment making. Factories make clothing which is shipped to other countries. 4. Sri Lanka gained independence from Britain in 1948. 5. Sri Lanka used to be called Ceylon. 6. When Sri Lankans say yes, they don’t nod their heads up and down but rather waggle it from side to side, so it looks as if they are saying no instead.

6. Most of the people in Sri Lanka are Buddhists. Many are also Hindus. Less than 10 per cent are Christian. 7. The capital of Sri Lanka is Columbo. 8. The population of Sri Lanka is 21,000,000. The population of England is 55,000,000. 9. Sri Lanka is known as both the ‘pearl of the Indian Ocean’ and the ‘teardrop of India’ due to its shape. 10. Because the country has lots of waterfalls, most of Sri Lanka’s electricity is powered by hydro-powered energy.

There are 11 universities in Sri Lanka. 13. 92% of people living in the country are literate which means that Sri Lanka boasts the highest literacy rate in the whole of South Asia. 14. Sri Lanka’s national flag is said to be one of the oldest flags in the world. 15. Although cricket is the most popular sport in Sri Lanka, the national sport of the country is, in fact, volleyball.

When will I be learning about Sri Lanka?
In Treetops:- In Geography carousels with Kerrie on a Monday you will be making your own weather station and you will be comparing the weather in Castle Gresley with the weather in Kandy. In carousels with Rich you will be creating an ‘All About Me’ project to send to the school in Kandy. Students at the school will send a project about themselves to us. In the summer term you will be making Sri Lankan masks with Anita in Art carousels. Also in the summer term with Anita you will be creating pointillism pictures of elephants. In Treetops and the Nest:- In RE newstimes with Rich you will be learning about Religious festivals in Sri Lanka. Erik and Mat will be cooking a Sri Lankan meal for the whole school in February. When will I be learning about Sri Lanka?
