1 Welcome to Curriculum Night!
The mission of West Middle School is to ensure high levels of learning for our school community.

2 Professional Background
Graduated from: University of Missouri Endorsed grades k-8 highly qualified in Science and Math Masters Degree from: Oakland University in Reading/Language Arts and Technology

3 Philosophy of Education
I think a good teacher varies her instructional approach to meet the needs of her diverse group of students. Some of these different approaches could be cooperative learning groups, direct instruction, integrated technology and student-centered instruction.

4 What will be taught in 7th grade science
We are a partner district with a curriculum called miSTAR (working directly with engineers from Michigan Tech University and across the state). We are working toward implementing the three dimensions of science; Cross Cutting Concepts, Disciplinary Core Ideas, and Science/Engineering Practices.

5 Please take a few minutes and look over the parent information titled “Preparing Students for a Lifetime of Success” – put out by the Next Generation of Science Standards. There is more information to follow, but it is a really exciting program and Rochester Community Schools is involved in many aspects of the research based, miSTAR program

6 Interactive Science Notebook (I.S.N.)
Composition notebooks work best. We will use one notebook for each semester. (Hopefully) Notebooks will be collected bi-weekly and work will be checked for that time period. All students will have assignments on the same notebook pages. Students may redo notebook pages to earn back points that were missed. Will contain daily entries, notes, pictures, and class worksheets, student observation, reflections and ….comments from me

7 Parent Communication The syllabus is on my school website.
Never hesitate to me with any questions. Don’t forget to regularly check ParentVue for your child’s progress online. That link is:

14 How will the Pre-Algebra classroom run?
Classes always start with reviewing the previous nights video. When there are no more questions students work on practice problems. When the students look as though they have an understanding of the material, a check point (quiz) is given. This consists of one problem from their practice work, so that I can assess if the student has mastered the material. If the student is not successful at their first attempt, they are given as many chances to revisit the lesson and retake the quiz as they can so as to master the material up until the chapter test. It is up to the student to request a retake.

15 Pre-Algebra Homework Video homework will be given almost every night which is on my moodle site. Students are expected to view the video and take notes in their math interactive notebook. Help is available not only from me but from my Moodle site as well. The link can be found my logging onto my school webpage or by following this link: Logging onto Moodle is a good way to look at a lesson ahead of time, or to review a past lesson..
