This is military time…1:00 PM
Significant also because of the unlucky connotation of the number 13
Main character is introduced
Winston Smith, 39, had a varicose ulcer above his right ankle
Which is why he walks slow and rests frequently
The narrator goes on to describe where Winston lives…in Victory Mansions which does not seem all that victorious

3. Page 2 Winston is described more
“ A smallish, frail figure, hair was very fair, his face naturally sanguine (red), skin roughened by coarse soap and blunt razor blades.”
Not sure why the razor blades are blunt, but it seems noteworthy and perhaps representative of society
“Big Brother Is Watching You” on posters
One of the posters is torn at one corner, and when the wind blows, it covers and uncovers the word INGSOC.
English Socialism: The government
The Thought Police are mentioned as the only police that matter.

The telescreen
Can hear everything except anything below a low whisper and can also see everything.
This is London, chief city of Airstrip One, the third most populous city in Oceania.
Rotting houses, windows patched with cardboard roofs with corrugated iron, crazy garden walls, bombed sites where the plaster dust swirled in the air.
Winston cannot remember London being any other way.

5. Page 4 The Ministry of Truth
The slogans of the Party: WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.
Three thousand rooms above ground level, and corresponding ramifications below.
Ministry of Peace, which concerned itself with war
Ministry of Love, which maintained law and order.
The really frightening one.
Ministry of Plenty, which was responsible for economic affairs.
Their names in Newspeak: Miniture, Minipax, Miniluv, Miniplenty

Winston does have some methods of “escape” from his world, but they don’t seem to be very satisfying or victorious.
Winston drinks a bottle of colorless liquid with a plain white label marked VICTORY GIN (sickly, oily smell).
Tastes horribly
He also takes a cigarette from a crumpled packet marked VICTORY CIGARETTES.
The tobacco falls out of onto the floor.

7. Page 6 Winston buys a blank book. Used as a diary This is not illegal
For $2.50 in prole quarters

This is not illegal
“Nothing was illegal, since there were no longer any laws”.
But the punishment for doing this would be punishment by death, or at least by 25years in a forced-labor camp.

8. Page 7 He begins writing. The significance of writing by hand.
He is not sure of his true age.
He did not know why or for whom he was writing.

9. Pages 8-14 Winston starts writing in his diary
It’s dated April 4th, 1984
He’s not sure if that date is correct
He is thinking back to watching a violent film
The film was about refugees being bombed in the Mediterranean
It was written surprisingly nonchalantly for how violent the video was
He quits writing because his hand hurts and then he reflects on his day. Orwell uses a flashback, with Winston thinking about the Two Minutes Hate which occurs every day while he is at work.

10. Sees O’Brien, a man that he’s seen before.
In the flashback, before he gets to the Two Minutes Hate, he sees a dark-haired girl that he finds himself attracted to, but he hates all women; especially her.

Sees O’Brien, a man that he’s seen before.
O’Brien is part of the Inner Party
He had a formidable appearance
He had a way of pushing his glasses back on his nose that helped put people at ease
Two Minutes Hate
Big Brother hoopla (aka propaganda)
Used to make citizens feel united
Daily dose of emotional release, directed by government

11. Emmanuel Goldstein was introduced in the video
“The Enemy of the People”
He had a Jewish face
People started “hissing” when his face popped up.
“Goldstein was delivering his usual venomous attack upon the doctrines of the Party” (Orwell 12).
Background of his image was the infinite Eurasian Army.
Every crime is started by Goldstein
To us, a hero…fights for freedom
Interesting that the government actually inundates the population with the answer to their own freedom, but most don’t see it.

12. Goldstein is the leader of the Brotherhood
He is an enemy fighting for freedom against Big Brother
The thought of Goldstein produced a lot of hate and anger immediately among the audience
Winston’s hatred was not turned against Goldstein at all, but on the contrary , against Big Brother, the Party, and the Thought Police.(Orwell 14)
The Two Minutes Hate did the exact opposite to Winston's Emotions. He hated Big Brother more
