1. Lighting Bulbs and Running Motors
Directions: Lighting Bulbs and Running Motors (GLEs1, 02, 03, 04, 05, 09, 11, 12, 13, 14, 17, 29, 30) Safety Note: Caution students not to try these experiments at home without an adult present with them. Students should never perform explorations involving electrical outlets. Use only insulated wires in these experiments. Use only a D-cell battery or smaller to prevent burns and or electrical shocks. Have students pose questions concerning how a light bulb works. Ask them to identify those questions that can be answered with a scientific investigation. Groups of students will use insulated wires, small flashlight bulbs or Christmas tree bulbs, and D-cell batteries to construct a simple circuit to light a bulb. Have students identify proper safety measures. They will discover that the electricity must flow in a complete circuit for the bulb or motor to work. After completing the task, students will draw and label the simple circuit in their journals or on a teacher-prepared data sheet. Given a set of diagrams of electrical circuits (some of them that will work and some that will not work), students will predict the ones that will work and will not work. Students will explain their reasons for placing them in each group as working or not working. Students can then use all diagrams to construct and test the illustrated circuits using the wires, batteries, and bulbs provided. This allows them to determine if their predictions are correct.
